Looking to get my wife, 20 year old daughter and 16 year old son on a three day trip in the Grand Rapids area at the end of July before my daughter goes back to college. Looking for a family resort, walleye, crappie, northern lake with cheaper cabins or tent camping with a lodge in the area. I have fished Brainerd and Lake of the woods alot in the past but have always wanted to try the Rapids area. Thanks for any input. JT

Ok, since nobody else is game I will toss something into the kitty. I am not familiar with the immidiate Grand Rapids Area, but about 30-40 minutes north is a town called marcel. There is a stretch run on a scenic hwy leading in from grand rapids that is some of the most beutiful land you will see in this state. It is like a post card. Marcel is small and has a bait/general store and a restaraunt. The lakes are good and scenic. I will not tell you I have hammered the fish up there, but it has been a while, and I am a mutch better fisherman now, and would like to go back. If you like big lakes they have north star, and if you like small lakes it there is tons of them everywhere. For a nice time on the water in scenic environment I suggest jack the horse lake. They have a lower end (cost) resort and there my be camping there or somewhere else on the lake.

BTW, I camped up there once on Northstar Lake at a resort. I think it was just called Northstar Resort. They had camping with electric and water, and also cabins. They did have a lodge too. The more I think about the area the more I want to go try it again. Lots of great memories of family fishing trips!

The bait store in Marcell is Frontier Sports. It is a fuel station and very nice convenient store too. I have to agree with Pike Lover, the area is unbelievable. I was up at North Star campground three weeks ago, and this weekend I'll be at the campground on Clubhouse Lake(about five miles away. The area is in the Chippewa National Forest and is very similar to the Boundary Waters. 1,600,000 acres and over 1300 lakes in the Chippewa National Forest. My guests and I always stay at one of the many National Forest campgrounds. They are very nice, fairly cheap, and I have never seen more then five out of thirty or more campsites taken in any one day. The area has outstanding fishing too. If you bring a canoe or very small boat that you can access a "carry in" lake, then you can get into some real great fishing. I usually have my boat and am limited to the lakes with a ramp, but still experience amazing fishing. The guys at Frontier Sports are very helpful also. They will let you in on all the current trends. Drop me a message if you would like some more info. Hey, I might be up there at the end of the month too.
