does anybody know if catfish are good eating cause i catch allot of them on the river and there nice size fish and i was thinking about trying to eat one but i heard that if you catch one on a muddy river you should put them in a trough ( if anybody doesnt know what that is it is used for horses to drink from on a farm)for a couple of days so they can get rid of the mud in their meat

What River? Makes a big difference. Catfish are very good if caught in a decent body of water, prepared and Cooked correctly.

I would not eat any out of the Mississippi rivers pool 2 or the Minnesota river in the metro area but I know some do.

I fish mainly the Mississippi for Channel and Flathead Cats I never keep any if there big I take a picture and throw them back.

Caught a 4 pounder the other night what a fight pound for pound these fish are amazingly strong and fun to catch.

Catfish are a blast to catch. Just be prepared. You don't wanna be out there with some light equipment and have a flathead clamp on. It's gonna make a fool out of you.

I've caught many cats, never once have I kept one.

I tried eating one at a restraunt a couple weeks back, me and a friend of mine about both puked.

I'm sure some people love eating them, just not me. I can find about 10 other fish I'd rather eat. Can't think of any I'd rather have on the end of my line though.

grandma and grandpa would catch about 10 cats a month in the summer in the 80's and then leave them in the bathtub 1/2 full of water overnight b4 cleaning them. Breaded and fried southern style, never anything bad about their flavor. (These were caught St Louis river.. NORTH of highway 53.. north of all the polution).

Even a BAD day of fishing is better than a good day of work; paydays excluded!

Like most anything else, it probably depends on how you prepare them. There is a restaurant not too far from my house that serves them all you can eat, breaded & fried and the place is always packed and has been open for over 20 years. The guy has his fish flown in from farm ponds in Mississippi where they are fed grain, etc. so the don't have a gamey taste. I've had them there and they were pretty good. Not sure if you will have the same luck with wild caught fish, I have never had wild caught catfish.

If you were inclined to try them my suggestion would be, besides avoiding the areas already posted on this thread, to surf the Net and find some different ways of preparing them that sound good to you and see what happens. It also goes without saying but make sure they are cleaned properly. Lots of people eat them in the South so they can't be that bad. Let us know how it goes.

I like them and think they are very good, But alot of people do not like the taste everyone to there own. But I did find if they do not know it is catfish most think it is great (LoL). These are a few rules I use to keep good eating cat fish. Find clean water do not keep them from the downtown area (I keep them from Anoka area north on the Mississippi)Cold water seems to be better I do not keep any cought in the heat of summer. And most of all SMALL the smaller they are the better (2 or 3 pound at the most smaller if you can). I make sure to remove all fat and belly meet. let them soak over night in milk and fry like any other fish. This is just the way I do things. Other my do other things but works for me.
