If you use the park landing, then look about 2 o'clock to the point. Work that point hard. You will find fish. Work the shallows to the deeps. You'll find them. Good luck!

NO walleyes. Had 1 nice northern that come in the boat, 5-6 pounder. seen a few huge muskies caught durring the day from other boaters. I came home with a limit of nice crappies and sunfish. i figured they weren't biting so i went to plan B and still had fun.
i think we are going to go back over the holiday too. figure why not. if the big fish don't want to bite we will hit up the pannies!

Yowsa! I always have a 5' ultralight rod in the boat, all rigged for panfish. If the big-uns aren't biting, I head for the weeds and drop a little jig with a small plastic on it and catch 'em until I get tired of it.
You'll never get skunked if you have a panfish rig ready to go. Truly. Just nose up into the shallow weeds and plunk something in the holes. They'll bite.

same here, always at least one extra rod to get going and have some fun with. just if i had a pale of crappie minnows i know i would have done better, those big fat heads i had weren't exactly prime for that condition, but i got a few to attack!
went out to Cedar Lake (Scott County) and the big sunfish were biting on crappie minnows. got a few small walleyes too as a bonus.

i spent a lot of time on independence 4 or 5 years ago. mostly for muskies but for walleyes a little. i always had good luck on walleyes ... real big, but nice numbers. i worked a jig and minnow/leech over the breaks. there are some rocky bottoms southeast of the island and a rock pile straight out from the boat launch (a ways out, look for a 13' hump surrounded by deeper water - my memory fails, but perhaps 25' surrounding it). muskies are all over the lake on weedlines and among the shallow rocks.
biggest problem with independence is the crowds. i used to fish very early and get off the lake before 10am. now i mostly stick to minnetonka (still very crowded, but closer to my house).
have fun! don
