Hi all. Another newcomer to Minnesota, this one without a boat. What's my best options? Most of the lakes I've been to in the Twin Cities area have limited shore angling opportunities (public access areas.) Any ideas would be appreciated!
Well, I don't know what part of the metro you are in, but the Northerns are biting pretty well from the Phalen Lake fishing dock. Most folks are dunking big sucker minnows under a bobber, but I've caught several on spinnerbaits and a Johnson Silver Minnow, casting from the dock.
Weedless is a must, though, since Phalen is pretty heavily infested with milfoil.
Some Pike being caught, too on Beaver Lake, just off McKnight road in Saint Paul. I was fishing with a kid the other day for Bluegill, when I heard a splash to my left. I had a pole rigged with a spinnerbait so I reeled in, picked up that pole and cast beyond the ripples where the fish had risen. Bam! 24" Northern was instantly on the line. Huge fun. Most of the Pike in Beaver are around 18".
Even eminent chartered accountants are known, in their capacity as fishermen, blissfully to ignore differences between seven and ten inches, half a pound and two pounds, three fish and a dozen fish. ~ William Sherwood Fox, Silken Lines and Silver Hooks, 1954
