OK, one of the species I have not caught so far in Minnesota is bowfin. I'm in Saint Paul, so I fish mostly in the north metro. Does anyone have any tips on places I might try? I know there are supposed to be some in Bald Eagle lake, but I've never encountered one.
Any tips would be appreciated. I'd rather not wait for a chance encounter, but would like to actually try to catch one.
Also, I know there are American Eels in the St. Croix. Anyone know a good spot I could try some evening?

there are quit a few in Chisago Lake. Look along the shoreline and a big gob of worm's seems to be best but have cought them on minnows. Sight fishing them is the only way I know of to target just them. Good luck they put up a heck of a fight. Side note there blood will stain just about anything it gets on.

I actually fish for them quite a bit up in Ottertail Co. Think more like catfish fishing... I either use raw bacon or several minnows in a cross pattern on a large treble hook. Most of my dogfish have been on bobbers in the reeds or on the edge of reeds, though I do catch them fishing for walleye and northern as well (big minnows)..
Very gamey fish, though they taste great smoked.. (doesn't everything?)
Good luck!

Last year I had some shrimp that had gone bad in the freezer. Hooked it up and let it sit on the bottom of the lake. It wouldn't take more than five minutes to hook into a big ol' dogfish. But then again last year this lake in Lino was packed with dogfish and then they all winter killed, hence the thousand eagles in the spring.
I'm sure they'll be back though. I plan on finding a good method of fly fishing for them because they'll eat anything and they fight like crazy. Even caught several on THE JIG when I was gill fishing last year. . They get a pretty bad rep but the bowfin can be fun if your just out for a good fight. They are even a very pretty fish around spawn when they change colors and that spot on the tail looks very cool.

Mineralman, I have a great lake just north of the cities that I fish for Bowfin. I fish them 3-4 weeks before opener usually. They are very active before the panfish are. I use about six crappie minnows on a 3/0 circle hook with a 1-2 ounce egg sinker. Squeeze the minnows so they are smelling good. Cast out your line and wait for a minute or two, then wam! They put up a great fight. Average fish comes in around 4 pounds too. It's a lot of fun while I'm waiting to catch some dinner fish. Send me a message to my inbox and I'll let you know the details.
