I've seen it before. We raised a stink and what happened next blew us all away. They took a full days catch and threw them on the lake side lawns of all the locals and cabin owners. It was there way of letting us know we couldn't do anything about it.

Worst part was that the lake in WI they were netting isn't all that big and every four years they come and suck the fish out during spawn.

I'm amazed that this still goes on.

Yup and we just keep paying for thier refills, another government program functioning just the way it should. I like mille lacs but only fish it if friends are making a weekend trip or something. Theres a few lakes near there that have just as good of fish. Plus i only got a 14 footer, but aint skeerd shocked smiley. For all you pro indians out there, I didn't take your land, and if you like that logic lets go bomb germany and japan. Then we can set every countrys borders back to the way they where in the days of the bible. Sounds like a plan.

State run casinos, if you haven't checked we could use some revenue, and have you been to the res lateley. Unless your getting casino money it's not pretty. Dang I'm a trouble maker. shocked smiley

I'll still get my walleys, but that crap should not be tolerated. If were going to stock mille lacs they should pay just like the rest of us.

I wouldn't say I was pro-Indian, but I am for govts honoring their treaty obligations. The fact is we got screwed by the fools who negotiated MN's gaming compact with the Indians.

Still, it's stupidly short-sighted for the Indians to net spawning fish.

Odin hits on a good point about the treaty obligations... Contractual obligations can't just be broken. Unless, I suppose, MN claimed bankruptcy. hmmmmm.... Maybe we can do something about this.

honestly though, until the indians change their ways on their own accord we won't be changing a thing. Hopefully some day they realize what they are doing in many cases is wrong.

At the risk of turning this into an anti-Obama rant . . .

If you read the Supreme Court's opinion from the Indian case (which, being a lawyer, I did), it says that Pres. Zachary Taylor's order was unenforceable. However, they did not say that the president did not have the right to stop the tribe, they just said that that order was unenforceable. My point is the president could issue a new order that complied w/the Court's ruling and stop this nonsense.

Now, do I think Pres. Obama will do that? I doubt it given that he thinks there are bigger issues out there and the fact that I'm sure the tribes donate a lot of money to all the political hacks out there wink smiley . But I think he could.

Indian schmindian....this was a horrible waste of the resources...but IT WAS PROBABLY NOT DONE BY A FIRST NATIONS OR NATIVE GROUP!

All indications to me, and others I have shared this with, would point to another culprit. The very same guys who are normally complaining about the natives rights to harvest fish! It looks more like the work of some folks that have been loosing the court battles and have instead decided to try an under the radar misdirection play to turn public sentiment against the tribes.

If enough anger is stirred up against the tribes over large walleye dumps then there will eventally be lots fewer gamblers at the casino.... and an elevated political willpower on the part of politicians to enact changes against the tribes fishing and casino situations. That is hitting the tribes where it really hurts right now. It appears this was a walleye slaughter done by European descended caucasians in an effort to frame the first nations group. It was done by guys mad and jealous that the casinos are making money and found this as a way to bring reproach on the tribes... it one of the oldest tricks in the book!

Think guys...you have all seen this back door game before.

As for the "fairness" of it all.....well how many of you would like to have your ranch, home, liveihood, and all you have ever known taken at gunpoint in exchange for the right of you and your descendants to spear fish on a few lakes. If that's a deal you would want to take then I have a few small lakes I will let you spear for all you ever own. That was the deal the natives got....sound so "unfair" to the the average walleye guy now? If so then trade your home to a native for his spearing rights...walk a mile in those shoes before getting all bent out of shape about some fish.

However, it does not appear this was Indian spearing.... just political positioning and back door, bottom of the deck dealing.

Get The Board,
