This year i'd like to catch a trophy northern for the wall (i'll take a pic and release it don't worry) I'm sick of using spinners and catching hammer handles over and over. I'd like to switch to a lure that will catch the big one, i don't care if i don't catch anything else all weekend if i get the one trophy ill be happy. The question is what do you guys/gals use for Trophy Pike?

Bucktails, Giant spinners. I'd stick to the stuff that you'd normally use for musky. If you can find some giant suckers, that would work well too.

I like to use large sucker minnows around 10" or so. Drift them over the cabbage with floats. When you get a bite make sure you give line and time before you set the hook. You can use this technique on most lakes. I'm still working out the details of catching pike on the "other" types of lakes such as the mine pits where live bait is illegal on trout water.

I agree with the previous posts--large inline or safety pin style spinners, larger minnow baits, spoons, and of course the live bait option is primo. One question to really think about though is what potential does the water you are fishing have. Basically, does it actually contain large pike in sufficiently fishable numbers to give you a real shot at landing a big girl? If it really does carry fair numbers of larger pike and all you are seeing is little guys then it may be more of a LOCATION problem and not a LURE problem. Changing lures/baits won't make any difference if there are not large pike in the system OR if they are located somewhere else in the watershed than where you are looking . For example, lot's of giant pike (20 pounds plus by my definition) are caught in north side bays right after ice out all over US and Canadian pike country--but nothing in those same bays except hammer handles 4 weeks later--the pike aren't "gone"--they have just moved because of higher water temps and relocated prey species. Another really good question in your case is if there are truly large pike in the waters you are fishing then what are the major prey species supporting them and where are those prey species at when you are out there--wherever that prey species is the pike are close by. In lakes with ciscos/tulibee/whitefish , for example, the pike may be in 50 feet of water on a rock hump with the school, or suspended with them over open water, but NOT ANYWHERE CLOSE TO THE SHALLOW WEEDS--the waters to hot for bigger pike and their dinner is elsewhere. Well, that's alot of things to consider, but the potential of that body of water to produce big pike and the exact location of those pike, if they are there, is usually 100 times more important than a specific lure used. FIND THE FISH FIRST--then lot's of lures can pull the trigger, but first things first. No lure can pull the trigger on a massive pike if it isn't where we are casting.

Good Fishing,
