I am taking my three boys up to Turtle Lake this summer, mid August. I am not much of a walleye guy. How do I try to catch a few walleyes that time of year? The lake has a lot of reeds, sand, and sharp drop offs. Thanks.

Hey Boatfull,

Welcome to My Fishing Pals. Glad to have you aboard!

Since this is the land of 20,000 lake or so, you are going to have to be a bit more specific. We have Turtle Lakes in Aitkin, Becker, Beltrami, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Douglas, Itasca, Lake, Meeker, Polk, Ramsey, Todd, Washington and Hennepin counties.

Any idea on which county your looking at?

I've fished that lake and yes, there are a few walleyes, when you can find them. Good size but few and far between. Most of the folks go with leeches up there and fish pretty shallow. The lake is more known for the smallies with some very nice ones taken. Some up into the 5lb+ range. That is primarily what I fish for when I head up that way. You can find some nice bluegills and crappies if you can keep the rockbass off your hook.
