i think we have talked about this before, but i just wanted to bring it up again because it has been on my mind lately. i love all of these ice fishing contests and stuff but how come there is never any open water contests that are as cheap as ice contests? i am going to the fishapolooza thing and that costed me $35 but if there are any open water contests then they are atleast like $100 a person. i think it would be awesome if we had a MFP fishing contest sometime this summer like june or july and have everyone put in like $20-$40 then put that money together for prizes and expenses.if we did that then maybe we could meet all of the people on MFP and just have a good time. and i like ice fishing but i am mostly an open water fisherman.maybe there are contests like this but i just have to look harder but i dont know, those are just my 2 cents. i would put something together but i am only 16, so...

I like the money prize idea. Say we kick in $20 and the prize money is split between biggest fish and 10th biggest, or something like that. MFP could post a word at midnight that has to appear in pics of the fish and all pics have to be posted by the following midnight. (We trust people not to photoshop. Most of us probably don't know how anyway.)

Might be good to have a thread where people who are going fishing the next day could throw money into a pool to compete against that day's entrants. People could send $50 or $100 or so to a "fishing bank" when open-water season begins and then use portions of their "bank account" to enter contests. Or there could be one-on-one bets.

Sorry to be a killjoy, but...

This is all well and good, but I don't think we could pull off an on-line tournament that involves prizes or cash. This is something we would have to contact the DNR about. Probably the State too, because we are getting very close to stepping on gambling laws when you are talking giving and taking money.

As for an actual tournament on a body of water, we have actually discussed this in the past. I think it would be kind of a cool idea and if we ended up with any extra money, we could donate it to a worthwhile charity related to fishing. And if it was successful, it would promote this site.

The only reservation I have is from discussions with others who have tried to run tournaments... there is definitely some experience that others have that would help. You have to start talking about the permits, whether you need insurance, weigh-ins, catch and release, etc. etc. etc. Also, if the prizes get to big, or the fee is over $25, you have to furnish a surety bond or bank letter of credit for $25,000.

Then there is advertising. Of course we could advertise here, but would we really get anyone to come? We have had some here try to organize get-tothers in the past and they usually bomb. Sorry, but that's the truth. It's a lot easier to hop on the computer and type then it is to have to go somewhere. I don't think we ever got more then 10 people show up for anything we have tried to do in the past.

Now we can talk about sponsors... If you giveaway a truck, that dealership is going to want x amount in advertisement before they will commit. It's all about the almighty dollar when you get to that scale of an operation. It's that way with any sponsors.

I am not saying this couldn't be done, just that if we decided to go forward, the first tourney would have to be small and we would have to make sure all of our i(s) are dotted and our t(s) crossed. To keep from having to post a bond, we would need to keep the fee under $25 and the total prizes under $25,000... that would probably be pretty easy to do. If we made the first one really small, we wouldn't even need to pull a permit from the DNR (read below)...

  • A person may conduct a contest without a permit provided any one of the following apply:

    1. There are 25 boats or less (replaces threshold based on number of participants)or 150 participants or less for ice fishing contests, entry fee is $25 or less, total prize value is $25,000 or less, and the contest is not limited to trout;

    2. The contest is not limited to specifically named waters, and the contest is not limited to trout;

    3. All the participants are 18 or younger;

    4. The contest is limited to rough fish; OR,

    5. The total prize value is $500 or less

  • This is something we can definitely think about...

hmmmmm... interesting. It can definitely be done. But it would take some people devoting some time and even some resources to make it happen.

A Truck! $25,000 prizes! Holy cow!

My impression was that T-Bone was talking about a small contest to begin with. I've never tournament fished, but would something like this, with just MFP folks, draw a crowd of more than 25 boats? I guess I have no idea.

P.S. Congrats on the Trophy Fish T-Bone
