It's been a few months since we have posted any statistics on the site... it's about time, eh?|
If you have been visiting this forum for a while, you know that every once in a while we post statistics on how the site is doing. We do this because we feel that we are all a team here and everyone deserves to know some of the information that pertains to this site. The site is 5 years, 11 months old (our birthday was February 26, 2004) and considering how young the site is... Well... it appears we are doing great! If this stuff bores you... just pretend this post isn't here.
Don't know where to start so I will just dig in!
It appears that the last time we posted any stats was in June of 2009. With this in minde, we are going to compare that month with the month of December, 2009. Keep in mind that October and November were actually slower then usual this year... people waiting for the ice, I guess... but we are still showing an upward trend and hopefully will keep going in this direction in the future.
We continue to pick up on new users. In fact, we have been getting quite a few lately. This is a good thing! One thing we have always had trouble with is getting any of the new users to post. We are still scratching our heads at this one. A quick look at users that actually take the time to acknowledge their registration via email shows that 40% never post anything and 20% post just one time... usually in the want ads. I wish we could figure out a way to get these users into the MFP family. But you can't force people to do something they don't want to do. I still think a lot of them join to check out the chatroom and then they're gone. Oh well...
We continue to get great responses on the tournament page which continues to rank very well in Google (#1 for minnesota fishing tournaments AND minnesota fishing contests). In December we got a bit over 143,000 visits. This was up by about 21,000 from June, 2009. Not bad considering we had a pretty slow period towards the end of the year until we started making ice. What is amazing is the upturn in forum views from June to December. June views were at 243,332 and December shows 302,424. Cool Beans, eh? I was worried about this when we took the latest posts off of the homepage, but it doesn't seem to matter a bit. The forum pages are by far the most popular pages we have going for us.
All in all, I think we are doing great. We seem to have a steady uptick in users, the search engine stuff is going well and we are starting to see some reports from all over the state... which is what this site should be all about. So far this winter season and the opener last year were the best we have had so far and I would like to thank the ice fishing community for stepping in and really keeping the forum going strong during the cold months... I can remember the days when we were getting a post a week... things have changed quite a bit since then and that was just over 5 years ago. So... keep on moving forward, eh?
The bounce rate went down slightly, from 60.9% to 58.2%. The Bounce Rate is the number of times a user hits a page and then just leaves. It's still pretty bad... I need to find a way to rope these visitors in, maybe... We used to be very bad at this and saw some improvement and now are slipping again - a lot of first time visitors hit the home page and then leave. I thought maybe the new design would help keep people around a bit longer, and though the bounce rate is better, it still is way too high, I think.
In December, 80.3% of all new visits were referred by a search engine - This is WAY up and I still get a kick out of this. 7.68% were referred by another site (this is down a bit - it was a bit over 8% in June), and 12.03% were not referred. What this means is that 12.03% of the visitors either filled in the site in the browser address bar or bookmarked the site (this is down a couple of points from June).
So what are the most popular pages in December? Well, I thought you would never ask!
Here are the top 5...
1 /minnesota-fishing-forum.taf - the forum, of course
2 /minnesota-fishing-pictures.taf - Whoa! - The pics pages!?!?
3 /fishingprofile.taf Whoa Again! - People looking at the profiles of our users? Better take care on whether or not you want to display your email address.
4 /minnesota-fishing.taf - This is the home page. For most sites, this would be #1.
5 /minnesota-fishing-Blog.taf - I am glad to see this here. People are actually looking at the blogs!!!
I still find it interesting that our users get looked at as much as they do. There are some bad fishing sites out there trying to farm email addresses. Be careful about whether or not you really want to show your email address in your profile, eh?
Following are search engine referrals...
1. google 77.91% - up
2. yahoo 11.13% - slightly down
3. bing 6.96% - down a couple of points
4. AOL 1.56% - up slightly
5. search 1.44% - up slightly
6. ask 0.69% - up slightly
7. alltheweb 0.07% - down
8. altavista - who cares
9. cnn - cnn search?
10. yandex - does anyone even use this one?
Google has pretty much dominated like usual... Bing is brand new and I have been seeing good referrals on other sites, but we are pretty low here at My Fishing Pals for it and seem to be slipping.
Ranking has been all over the place on Google and a lot of this has to do with the new personalized search that they have implemented. I turn off cookies and try to search as anonymously as possible and still get the following results (google sure is getting tricky lately). the phrase Minnesota Fishing is popping us up at #11 (down 2), sometimes #9. Minnesota Fishing Forum we are still at #2. Minnesota fishermen and Minnesota fishing tournaments and minnesota fishing contests - we are still #1 - - - HORRAY!!! Minnesota DNR rose drastically from #16 and #17 to at least the first page! - That's a tough one to get, folks! MN fishing reports went to #6 (same). Minnesota fishing stories are at #1 and #2 along with mn fishing tournaments. MN fishing pictures and Minnesota fishing pictures are at #1 and #2. MN fishing articles and Minnesota fishing articles, we are at #1 and #2. MN fishing news we went down to #4. Minnesota fishing news stayed the same at #3 and #4. Ya da ya da ya da...
I used to give stats on Yahoo and MSN (the new Bing), but what the heck. We aren't getting enough referrals from those search engines to even worry about it anymore. If the market share changes on this, in the future, we will start adding these stats back in, eh?
Some of the phrases being used to find us. Here is a list of the top 10 for all searches...
1 mn fishing reports
2 minnesota lake maps
3 ice fishing contests in minnesota
4 mn fishing forum
5 ice fishing tournaments mn
6 mn ice fishing tournaments
7 mn lake maps
8 minnesota fishing reports
9 my fishing pals
10 minnesota fishing tournaments
What the heck? A lot of people searching for My fishing Pals! That means they already know we exist and they are trying to find the Website!
mmmm.... Dontchya find this stuff interesting!
Now for referrals from other web sites. A BIG THANK YOU!!!! These are people who were at another site and clicked a link to get here. Here are the top 5...
Click 'em folks! It's the least we could do for their referrals!
Anyway, that's it for now. Not bad for a site that is almost 6 years old! The birthday for the site is February 26, 2004. That is the first day we went live after the "Big Database Crash" of 2004. I would like to thank everyone for their support. If anyone has any questions, you can post them here.
Catch Ya Later, eh?
