So I am thinking of buying a new Vexilar FL-8se for ice fishing, but wonder, if I do, will that have any actual usefull application on my boat? I already have a LCD Graph Style Eagle locator. I am trying to justify this purchase, and if it will be useful on my boat that will go a long way blush smiley)

Also, with wanting to possibly use it for the boat, is there anything I should know before making a purchase. Also, I spent some time comparing the actual specs on the other vexilar models, and it seems to me the extra cost is not worth what you get. Expect for the looks, and visial flasher presentation it seems the main difference is the zoom abiility. For a casual flasher user like myself, I just can't see that beeing a big deal. Other than that, the display detail, color, and power, all seem the same from model to model. In other words, the ability for it to show fish, and bottom detail appear to be nearly the same.

Bottom line, buy what you can afford. The nicer the equipment, the nicer the overall purchase. This usually means better features and better warranty.

As far as open water, I still use a flasher for detecting hard bottom. This is coming from a guy who has three Lowrance Units and a Hummingbird Side Imager!
