First time trip to Lake of the Woods...I'm planning to stay at the Long Point Resort in mid January. Is the ice fishing good there? Or is it much better at the Rainy River and Zippel Bay?

The lady at Long Point Resort seemed nice and I like the idea of having a plowed road to the ice house, can come and go as we like. Any info greatly appreciated. We will probably fish walleyes with tip-ups so we can socialize. Will jig if the tip-ups are slow. Looking for steady action and a good time. -Mark

I have went to both, and they both have their hit and miss weekends. Tough to schedule now and see what it will be like then. If you get a sleeper shack on the ice, I believe zippol had the nicer ones.

coldmark,
I have been going to longpoint for about 7-8 years in January. We go the first weekend after the new year and knock on wood have ate fish and fish only every night up there and usually brought home a limit at the end of the weekend. I ususally make 3-6 trips up there a year depending. All in all the fish dont bite at night. You will get the ocasional but now that they are not netting the pout that is mostly what you will catch. Get a cabin and go in and have fun play cards. The biggest mistake people make is what you said "throw out tip-ups"
this is not mille-aces they dont use rattle reels. Not saying they will not produce occasionally but if you want to catch fish "JIG" jig some more and jig more if you stop the fish stop coming around. They will teach you the same thing on the rainy. A rap in one hand and a swedish pimple in the other qutoed by "Carl Brown-Rainy River".

Oh yeah Joyce is the lady you talked to and is a sweaty just a little tuff on the hearing.

Do what you may just trying to help.......

Thanks all, it sounds like Long Point is as good as any location. Any advice on jigging would be greatly appreciated.

What Jigs? Techniques? Type of line?

Coldmark,
I will make you a deal. My email address is shannon@bucketrack.com and I will be going up to longpoint probably once in december and for sure the weekend after the 1st of Jan. I will spill the beans on every thing I used.

Problem is I just can't force myself to talk ice fishing yet!

Yeah, it's hard to be talking ice fishing when it's 90+ degrees out there.

Yeah, I better "cool" my excitement for a few months. I'm just trying to get a headcount of fishing partners and book something while cabins are still available. Once I book the cabin, I'll forget about it until after deer season.

Thanks Sand Burr, I'll contact you then.

i think that you should stay at ballards resort instead because ballards resort is one of the best resorts on the lake almost every time you fish in one of ballards boats or ice house you always catch nice fish
