gonna cost at least $1000 now to be a Minnesota Fishing Guide on navigable waters.

The Coast Guard-- for safety's sake, it says -- is stepping up enforcement -- and hurting the wallets -- of small operations on northern lakes.

Guides in and around the Twin Cities and as far south as Winona who work on the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers first heard in June that the Coast Guard was intent on enforcing a decades-old licensing requirement that would affect them in many ways. At issue is the Guard's "6-pack'' license for captains of boats that carry for hire six or fewer passengers -- a description that covers virtually all fishing guides in the state.

I wonder if you could get around the law by hiring a guide to ride in your boat and having him tell you where to fish and how-to fish? Most fisherman today have pretty good equipment and are really just hiring a guide to help them learn a new lake. Also, the Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener is being held on Lake Kabetogama in 2010 and the local committee is looking for "Fishing Hosts" to take visiting news media people out fishing? Will all these "Fishing Hosts" be required to have a Guides License? Any lawyers out there?

If all guides are required to get the license I'm sure the ones who do it for their sole source of income will certainly do it. The thing that will change is the price they charge their clients.

When the cost of doing business goes up so do prices, thats the way it is in any business.

Here's an update... and it appears that things may be looking up! grin smiley

Most Minnesota fishing guides probably will get a break from the U.S. Coast Guard this summer, and will not have to be licensed -- even though some guides were dry-docked by the same federal agency last year.

An announcement is expected this month that inland Minnesota fishing guides and others who carry only a few passengers for hire on most federally "navigable" waters in the state will be given a licensing requirement postponement, Coast Guard Commander Mark Cunningham said Tuesday from St. Louis.

You had better talk with every coast guard adirmal out there. I was told it starts this spring, no lic. forget guiding on coast guard named lakes, list T.B.A. later. Even guides and pilots of launches on mille lacs will need the full C.G. lic.

You won't need it on Red Lk Cookie as far as I know.

And like BigBite is reporting they are working on something a bit more reasonably and more affordable as far the test goes.

Don't bet on it, one of the things that came up, was lakes that have been used for commerce will get tagged. I have also been told senator bachman wrote letter requesting, coast guard to hold off on the requirements. The head people told her "NO", they are going to start enforcing rules that have been on the books for many years.
Before 9-11, the coast guard was under the transportation dept. it is how under homeland security. Enforemnet is coming from the top. Better get ready to start studying.
