I know a guy who recently caught a 8lb+ bass out of small metro lake, i dont "know" him, know him but i know who he is. my cousin told me to go check out his pictures on myspace, so i did... and guys, this bass was BIG ooo smiley !! i know the lake where he was at, its a very small lake near square lake, no boat access only canoes. i've been there this year around the bass opener and caught a few good ones on a canoe but never thought that there could be a potential record in this lake... i was strolling through the pictures looking at it in awe but once i got to the bottom of the page it disgusted me smirk smiley he had pictures of it in his living room... i was like " ok maybe he was going to mount it"... but the very next picture he gutted the fish, and the next?! fillets!!??? crazy smiley at that point i was very pissed off.... this is a once in a lifetime catch and he was going to EAT IT??? shoulda released the fish and try to catch it again or mount it.... 2 simple things to do, eating it wouldn't even of crossed my mind... com'on guys a potential mn record gone... i'm sorry but these type of people shouldnt even be fishing frown smiley ... i've caught a few 6-7 lb. bass this year and released them all because i know they will get bigger and one day i could have a record bass on the other end of my line... thank you for reading this i just had to air out my thoughts somewhere...-moestavern10

I agree that releasing it is the best option but I also wouldn't blame the guy for keeping it for a mount. If he kept it for a mount the fish would be killed so I guess it wouldn't matter if he decided to eat it instead in my opinion.

Either way the fish is dead. Whether he mounts or eats it both are legal so not much I could say to the guy.

Beautiful fish.

As for keeping it, whether to eat it or mount it, that topic probably gets debated on forums daily.

In his defense, what he did was perfectly legal.

And, although I myself do not keep bass, I know people who do. I have tried it at cookouts and its actually pretty good. I even know someone who had promised some friends a walleye cookout, went out to catch the fish, couldn't find any walleye but caught a few smallies and cooked those up, no one knew the difference.

Having said all of that, I agree w/those who think he should have let the fish go. A big female like that is probably one of the most prolific spawners in the lake, especially a small lake like the one that is described. Plus, its in a northern state where they don't get much bigger than that. Moreover, if he really wanted a bass meal there were probably plenty of smaller fish he could have kept, which might have actually helped the population by culling out some competition.

Its certainly a topic that creates a very heated and passionate debate from both sides.
