So I fish a metro areal lake where Channel Cats are stocked. I have fished the lake a half dozen times, and never caught a cat, and just assumed I never would. Then this weekend, we boated 3 of them. I know they were small by catfish standards (probably 6 pounds or so, but they fought unlike anything I have caught before. I think thye might even be stronger pound for pound than a dogfish, which I had previously crowned best fight pound for pound (of course I don't try to catch them, but they are fun to pull in). Any how, I can't help but feel a 6 pound cat is probably pretty decent sized for a lake. I also am faced with the realization that I despartlay want to catch a large catfish. I live off the mississipi in Elk River, and would love to find a spot or two in close driving distance to give me a shot at a big river cat. I am hoping I can find a shore fishing location as I am not crazy about boating the river. I am a total newb, and would like any advice you feel you can give. I have a proper rod and reel already, and am looking for simple methods/rigs, and locations. If anybody out there knows of any groups that go out I could join that would be awsome.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks smile smiley

Also I my 3 fish this weekend on live sucker minnows. I know that they are all sorts of opinions on catfish baits, but if it works in a lake wouldn't it work in a river too?

I tend to agree with you about the fight of a catfish. My largest this year has been 10 lbs and it was an amazing fight. I fish the Mississippi near the Ford Dam and have found success shore fishing there.

I tend to catch my cats on cut bait (cut up sucker minnows). Nothing else has been as successful for me.

I've heard you can pull huge cats out of the Minnesota river, 30+ lb flat heads, but I can't find any shore spots that will let me fish all night.

Hmmmm, what do I have to do to get some advice on Catfishing? I have posted on this couple of times and even reached out to spacific users who seem to have knowledge, to no avail. Do people just not want to help each other for fear of devulging secrets?

I have read info online, and even have a book that I have covered. The problem is, the information that I have is not spacific to my area. I know that there are several "Pool" areas that are popular in the cites, but how do I find a spot closer to where I live in Elk River? Do I have to find a dam, or is that not necassary? I don't care about catching 40 pound trophy flatheads, but would be happy with some nice channels to start out with. I would like to use live minnows, to give me a chance at catching other species while I am out as well.

We've had numerous discussions on Catfishing here at MFP's which has become extremely popular of late.....

Here's a link to everything you'd want to know about Cat-fishing.

Credit for this goes to Hanson and all of the great Cat-men that frequent Fishing Web-Sites like Fishing Minnesota and IDO!
