It was too darned windy today for my usual Bald Eagle trip, so I grabbed my catfish stuff, a couple dozen nightcrawlers, and headed for the Harriet Island public dock.

Lots of sheepshead, as usual, and no catfish or carp today, but I did catch a really fat, healthy 18" walleye. First walleye I've caught at that location. Also a small white bass.

With its views of downtown St. Paul, trains, and barges, this is still one of my favorite shore-fishing site on the Mississipi. There are always tourists to ask you questions. Today, a family showed up and got to see me catch a 16" sheepshead. A little lesson on the Mississippi fishery and a chance for the kids to touch a fish. It's all good.

I've written about this spot before, but I'll repeat some rigging info, in case anyone heads down there. I use a sliding sinker rig with a pair of 1/2 oz. worm sinkers above a swivel. A 24-30" leader and a medium-sized circle hook completes the rig. I thread the nighcrawler on the hook, leaving both ends free. Wait for a solid take...most fish are hooked when you pick up the rod. I just rest the rod against the railing. You'll never hook the nibblers anyhow, so you might as well wait for a strong take.

Take a large net with you, and fish straight off the end of the dock, casting out about 50' from the end of the dock. If you catch something over 5 lb or so, walk it down the dock to the lower section, passing your rod around the light stanchions, then net from the lower dock.

My records here include a 25 lb. channel cat and a 20 lb. carp.

That is a super cool area especially after dark when I'm out. I fish across the River from there near the High Bridge. The Channel Cat bite should pick up here shortly. A 25lb Channel Cat is a darn nice Kitty!

Thanks for the report!
