I don't of any special tricks, but keep them cold and change out the water in the container daily. I've kept them alive for over two weeks before.

I wouldn't say you have to change the water daily if they're kept cold, but if you do change the water, use lake water or some other type of filtered water. Try not to use tap water, if possible, because it usually contains contaminants which the leeches can be very sensitive to. If you really want to go out there, I have heard good things about the leech bedding, too, but you must keep that cold and moist as well. Good luck on your trip, looks like summer finally has arrived up here (and so have the mosquitoes, REALLY bad this year!!!).

Hey ksbancroft,

Welcome to My Fishing Pals. Glad to have you aboard!

I've successfully kept leeches up to two weeks in the fridge. I also use lake water when changing the water... usually about every 3 days.

Like people said cold is the key.

Keep them in a insulated foam container and keep that in your cooler or a fridge. They are pretty tough critters as long as you keep them cold.

When are you going up to leech? I've heard some good reports using a jig and minnow lately so if you go soon you may want to consider that as well.

yup...should have mentioned to use lake water...chemicals in tap water probably wouldn't be real good for 'em.

They tell me where I purchase leeches (Vados bait) tap water is only ok if it's well water. Otherwise the clorination in city water has a lasting effect, shortening the leeches life. I use well water and with changing every 2-3 days I have had great leeches for 6-7 weeks in the fridge.
