Well, I made one of my trips down to the public dock in Harriet Island park. I'm taking a kid down there next week, so I wanted to prospect a little.

Lots of activity. Sheepheads, of course. But, the same nightcrawlers dredged up a 10 lb. and 20 lb channel cat and a 10 lb. and about 16 lb. carp.

Slip sinker rig with a circle hook. Use circle hooks, please, so you can easily release the big cats and carp. Remember not to set the hook. Just pick up the pole and the fight's on. Wait until the poll bends a lot, and just ignore the nibbles.

I was fishing off the end of the dock, which meant walking the fish down to the lower dock to net them, passing the rod around the light poles, but no matter. The hassle's worth it.

I like this spot for family fishing. There's a restaurant on the dock, and you get to watch downtown St. Paul and the barges and the yacht club while you wait for a bite. Just remember that anything can bite there, so watch the kids' rods. A 20 lb. channel cat is no joke on light tackle.

No photos. I forgot my tackle box camera, so...

hmmmmmm... sounds fun.

Can anyone else chime in on the circle hook thing?

I picked a bunch up but is it true that you don't need to set the hook?

I trust the mineral man but I'm new to the circle hooks and my confidence in such a tactic isn't there yet..

Thanks,

Nice MineralMan I've been shorefishin across the River from there under the Hi-Bridge!

Correct Logan, Circle hooks you do not set the hook you just point the rod at the fish and start reeling once you feel the fish. The fish will be hooked in the corner of the mouth every time.

We do have a circle hook thread somehwere around here I'll see if I can dig it up.

Pier!

Yah. Circle hooks are super for bait fishing for many species. Both cats and carp tend to inhale the bait, and without circle hooks, you get a lot of gut-hooked fish. Same is true of freshwater drum, which often are gut hooked when you catch them and that's the end of them.

They take a little getting used to for all of us who have hauled back to set hooks for so many years, but they really, really do work.

I pretty much use nothing else now for baitfishing, and am very satisfied with how well they work and how few fish are badly injured when I land them.

dang... now I know why I've been missing a lot of fish. since I started trying for cats I have had quite a lot of missed opportunities. I'm guessing I might have been pulling that hook out the mouth and not letting it do the circle hook thing. I guess you live and learn.

Pier- I found that other thread you were talking about.. Thanks for reminding me.

Good luck all
