Strike King's Rage Tail baits seem to be, well...all the rage this year. I tried out the Rage Toad and I have to say, I don't love it. Initially I had it hooked on a big EWG 5/0, but darn thing kept turning over and, after a while, sliding down the hook. I changed to a hook with a screw lock and it did much better, but man is that thing loud! I think it may have even been scaring away fish. I know it was scaring away the little sunnies that I could see near me. No takers on the bait all morning. Not even a peck. Anyone else been using these?

I think it's meant to be loud like a buzzbait though I haven't seen this one yet.. I'll might try it in July when I start to see frogs all over the shore. Strike King recommends a 4/0 or 6/0 wide gap hook so your hook choice was probably ok.

I think the major thing is it's ONLY meant to be a top water frog, so it has to be fished weightless so it stays on top, as the frogs are going to be top heavy and rotate under water because of the legs. If you want a frog for for catching under water maybe something hollow would be better.

Just a thought.

The funny thing is, a buzzbait is probably my favorite lure! This thing was just too much for me though. Plus, last night, I switched back to my good old Stanley Ribbit (which can be fished on top or below the water) and caught 4, just like this, on a little lake in Mendota Heights. The frogs are out here in the cities, it was overcast and a little choppy...the perfect frog fishing day. What a blast.

I have hopped off the Rage Tail bandwagon.

Went back to the same lake today and fished the other side. They were slamming the frog again. 2 days of fishing, 8 chunky bass one single Ribbit. Gotta love the Ribbit.

I saw a 'big ol' frog by the river today .. had rock bass messing with my topwater lures in an area too rocky to use any other lures.. so I stopped and watched the frog.. I'm bring the camera to get pics.. and then hooking some gulp frogs up to see what I can do..last year in the same spot I had 3 lines cut from Pike.

Back to the Rage Tail for a second. I saw the big commercial for them today during outdoor channel's fishing shows....they say you can fish it IN the water but I really believe from looking at it that it'll be too top heavy for anything but 'buzzing' it.

This is getting to prime time for fishing frogs. When it is working it is too much fun.

Just two side-notes. First the rage-tail frog. Slow it down and it is just fine. Just like a buzzbait, it is supposed to fish lowly. Second, while frog baits are wonder to fish now, they are even better in mid August over mats. That's when you get more hogs. You might try the rage-tail frog then to raise noise through the mats if the mats are wet on top. Haven't tried the latter but most conventional baits don't to a great job under this one condition. I am trying it come dogdays.

dhewes, normally I would agree. but the weed cover is so thick this year and the water level is so low. I decided to try the frogs early. It's been paying off. Nothing super big but still a lot of fun surface strikes and some nice pike and bass (When I can get the hook set).

Also I'm shore fishing so with the weeds how thick they are I've been really limited on options. A plastic frog is one of the only things I can cast over the beds of weeds.

I don't know; it seems like it needs to be in open water to work the way it's supposed to. Myself, I switch to hollow bodied frogs for mats and pads. Drop a worm rattle inside and drag/hop it on top. There's lots of action and sound with this. Plus, you can float them in the pockets and edges. I'd like to hear how the Rage Tail does though.
