I had a guy in the shop who was telling me that late at night he fishes big northerns off the lights of a damn near his home. He claims to use lage black spinner baits with heavy braid and says he hits good fish all summer long. I generaaly think of northerns as sight predators but I do know a couple of musky fisherman who love to fish at night. Anyone else got info on night time northerns? Love to hear the details. Thanks! Lex

I had always read/been told that pike have poor eyesight in the dark, but I hear of too many reports of people catching them at night to think that is true.
I remember guys fishing for them by lights when I was a kid and catching some. My guess is the baitfish were attracted to the lights b/c there wer bugs under the light that fell in the water, and the pike followed the baitfish. Given that the lights shined into the water, maybe there was enough light for the pike to be able to hunt. The same might be true at your buddy's spot.
We also caught a small one on a tip up at night, but I suppose that it could have been attracted to the commotion on the ice. It hit the tip up no more than 5 minutes after we drilled the hole. Either that or maybe we dropped the bait right on its head.
My suggestion is you go with him and see if he is telling the truth. We all know a fisherman and a fish story are never far apart . . .

I've caught a few Northerns at night, but thinking about it, it was at a Dam that had lights, nice size fish, I do know people that fish for Muskie's at night, around Docks and Marina's have seen some large ones, if you put food in front of them they will eat most of the time.
