So I haven't ever fished the river before today but I'm really interested in fishing it this summer. Today I went out after work for a little over an hour. I went to Hidden Falls Regional Park and walked the shore for a bit. I landed one Smallie but that is all I could come up with. I was throwing several different lures: swimbait, spinnerbait, beetle spin, and shad raps. Like I said I am very new to the river so if anyone has any tips for me, I would greatly appreciate it such as: spots (not specific, just general), lures, bait, technique, etc. The river is HUGE and very different from the lakes that I am used to fishing so if someone could point me in the right direction I would be very thankful!

My First Smallmouth EVER.

Haha I would have smiled but I had my camera along with a little tripod. That decided to be broken when I caught my first Smallmouth. So then I realized I had a camera on my phone. After trying to set it up on my tacklebox and failing, I said screw it and just held out my arm. It worked better than I thought but the pissed off seemed to be on my face and the fish was out of the water for too long, so instead of snapping another I put the fish back in the muddy Mississip.

I was down there last weekend, I didn't have a pole with so didn't get to try my luck. The river looks very low for this time of year. I don't get to fish the river much so can't offer much advice. I usually bring lots of jigs & rigs w/ plastics & live bait when I can, and a few spinners, nothing expensive. Look for any current breaks & fish above and below them is all I do. You seem to be off to a good start, nice fish by the way. Get a little notepad and write down some notes for yourself, its helps me when trying someting or somewhere new.

Grum is pretty much right on.

I prefer to use jigs with plastics or live bait, or some sort of lindy live bait rig.

The problem with casting other baits like crankbaits, spinner baits, etc, is they don't get down into the strike zone for very long. If you are pitching jigs you'll know you are on the bottom and in the strike zone the entire time.

The river is pretty low right now but you can catch smallies in this stretch all year long. I would try to cover as much ground as I could right now. Work the shoreline from Hidden falls up to the dam or on the other side from Minnehaha creek up to the dam. On the Minnehaha side you can probably walk all the way up to the locks rights now which can be a good spot to try. You'll catch everything that swims up there. Jigs for sure up in that spot.

The rip rap along the shorelines can be a good spot for smallies, just be careful walking through it becuase its a broken ankle waiting to happen.

Yup. Here's a couple more from last night. I caught my first sheephead and I was excited to have another new species under the belt so I took a pic. I soon found out that sheephead get much bigger than the first one I caught. As they progressively kept getting bigger each catch.

Here's a picture of one of the many Sheephead we caught.

Got to love the river. Its a great place to go if you want to add to your species list.

I go to Hidden Falls at times and target channels. Was there last week and got a 20 inch channel on my first cast. Then hit some snags and decided to call it a day.
