So.. Over the past couple years I have really gotten back into fishing. Since that time I have been having a basic problem that lots of people have.. LINE TWIST!!

It's never a problem with my bigger set ups because I'm usually using a braided line or some sort of limp super line.. These lines are always limber and never cause much trouble.

But the second I start spooling up my 4 lb. monofilament line I can always tell I'm in for trouble.. The last stuff I bought was 4 lb. STRENN long cast fishing line. This line cost me around 8 dollars at fleet farm and it was possibly the worst line I've ever owned.. I used half the spool and my friend used up the rest. We both put it on the reel with our own methods and both of us were getting rats nests, knots and twists.. crazy smiley crazy smiley mad smiley

So before this last weekend I decided to try something new. When I ice fish I'm usually using 2 lb. Cajun red line. I decided to give it a shot. I went to fleet farm. Walked right past those blue boxes of crap line and stopped at the red stuff. The box said Cajun Red Cast..

Well, I took it home. And read on the internet that putting your spool in a tub of warm water to soak is a good idea. I did that. Then I put a weight on the spool so it would stay in the water (face up) without moving. I spun it onto my reel a little ways then moved the pole down and gave the line some slack. Amazingly it didn't twist at all!! I filled the reel and fished all weekend without one twist of line. It’s as if there is no memory at all..

Well, obviously I'm very happy with the line. I'm not sure how much the soaking it helped but I imagine I'll be doing it again next year when I put more Cajun red cast on my reel. smile smiley smile smiley

I was always taught (by my Grandpa) to cast something without hooks into the river current and let it carry out as far as you trust it to not snag then to wind it up and the stretch is supposed to make the line more forgiving and eliminate twists/memory... I don't always do it though tongue smiley

He also liked to troll with drag loosened and let the line out of most of the reel to fix the problem that way also...

The interesting thing to me is.. I've only had line twist once in recent memory.. last spring I tried these plastic 'propeller' lures and it didn't matter whether I threw it on mono, or fluorocarbon, I had one mess of knots and ended up recycling 200 yards of each.

yeah.. I've heard the same before. I'm not having any trouble yet but if it starts twisting I'll be doing that.

I ran into the man's mall as soon as I read this thread. I'll let you know how it works for me! Thanks for the info. I have been getting so frustrated with tangles this year.

sportsnut, sound like you might want to use a bar swivel with that propeller lure.. That is, if you didn't throw it away by now.

Bassman, Let me know how it works.. I don't know how much difference it makes but when I put the line on I had the spool submerged in water, laying flat with the label up and the facing me.

I'll have to try that Logan. My experience with Cajun Red is that it has the worst memory that I have ever seen. Very frustrated with it in the higher pound test-lines.

I kept the propeller lure set I was given by an old guy who seems to have bought a few gimmick lures over the years.. the best thing about them other than getting them free is all of the 4 inch leaders that were in the package smile smiley

Pier, I haven't used anything more than 4 lb. test cajun cast... I have 2 lb. on the ice reel and 4 lb. on my ultra lite.. I can't speak for anything else.. But you should try the spool in the water and see if you have good results! I'm interested whether it works well or if I just got a good spool of line...

I've never had much trouble with line twist.

I use alot of mono in the 6-8 pound range and it has been fine for me.

I do use a swivel on most of my set ups though. I'll tie jigs straight to the line with no swivel but pretty much everything else I'll use a swivel. It seems to eliminate most of the frustration.
