My buddy and I are going up to woman lake on the opener to try to catch some big northerns. We thought we should try something different this year. I usually only catch northerns on accident so i dont really know how to JUST catch them. I was just seeing if anybody here knows how to catch those BIG northerns? Thanks! wink smiley

I have caught some really nice ones, 15 lb. plus, using 10 lb. test, a big boober, steel leader, big hook and heavy pike minnows. The minnows themselves can get to be 8 to 10 inches. You'll know you are doing it right if the minnows are pulling your bobber all over the place smile smiley

Alot will depend on the weather conditions and water clarity. But here are my best ideas, old and new for some great northern action.
Bluegill colored 5" berley hollow belly swimbait.
Chartruese spinner baits with colorado blades
spoons of various colors ( red and white and fire tiger are my faves
And Suicks
Good luck!

My experience with slimers is the same as all the predators. They really don't want to work all that hard for a meal if they don't have to.That being said they will hide anywhere they can and look for the easy meal ticket. Opening weekend look shallow with new weed growth being best.I was just in a fishing tourney for crappies this weekend and the pike were in 3ft of water messing with the crappie bite.We caught 3 northerns 1 was 4 lbs. Another boat out prefishing the tourney had a 45Inch.muskie.If there is a good inside turn for walleyes and a gator likes it also guess who wins.My experience is that walleyes will stay away from the gator kill zone.BUT nice size walleyes Generally 3lbs. and up don't fear big gators.Inside tip for slimers use black! For walleyes don't use black.FIND AN AMBUSH SPOT on the weedline.Or for an easier idea troll the weedline.Normally northerns will be shallower than walleyes.

We go there every year with my whole church. But they mainly go walleye fishing and me and my buddy go for Big bass in the lilies in that other lake through the little creek. Biggest last year was 5lbs!
