Yep... got out for the first time on open water this year. Woodtick and I hit Bald around noon and fished until around 7:30 pm. We probably caught around 70 fish altogether, most of them were crappies, which is what we were targeting. We did get a few nice ones, 5 that were in the 11 inch range, most everything else was small. Also caught pike, sunnies, bucketmouths and perch. A couple of the bass were pretty nice... of course we put everything back in the lake. Debated keeping the crappies, but decided that we were going to do the catch and release thing.

Water temps varied from 50.5 to 54.9. The warmer and shallower water produced the most. We probably fished mostly around the 6 to 8 feet range. Using slip bobbers and plain, long shank hooks and crappie minnows. Set the depth really shallow... around 1.5 feet. We tried a couple of hours going deeper and tried drop-offs and such too, but we had to go in shallow again because it wasn't happening deep.

All in all, it wasn't a bad day. weather actually cooperated for us. I think it will be peaking for crappies next weekend... I'll be there wink smiley

If the weather isn't too bad tomorrow I will be heading out around the shores on Bald Eagle to try and catch some fish! So hearing that they are in the shallows makes me feel a little more hopeful......

Let me know how it goes. I would like to go out to try it out there sometime although I havent been to the lake before. Where would be a recommended spot/location?

From the shore? I'm not too sure. I'm gonna try and find a good spot on the North side of the lake seeing as that will probably have a little bit warmer of a water temperature than the south side. I will let you know though!

The lake does well on the North side in the weeds this time of year. Sometimes you can catch crappies staging in the rockpile point that sticks out (by the buoys), but there was nothing happening there when we were out.

Fishing the good spots from shore is not an option this early. In a couple of weeks, you will be able to catch them by the launch where a few people fish. The problem is that on the north end, there is quite a few cattails and other junk and you can really only access these spots from a boat.

Yeah, I pulled out my lake map yesterday to plan a few spots with 6-8 feet of water and I saw it's going to be hard to find good shore spots fishing that depth. And yeah, the extreme north end (by bobbers) is loaded with cat tails and lilles in the summer time. Hmmm....
