well i am a roughfisherman at heart, and i LOVE fishing for bowfin (dogfish) the past few days i have caught a few nice walleyes while going for bowfin, whenever i was stalking i would have small walleyes come and take my jig and shiner from the bowfin. i had a 7lber come out of no where an take my bait. i also caught an 8lber while bottom fishing with cutbait.

and to top it off i got a 9lber while float fishing for crappies. i was reported to the local CO by people on another forum, who have been saying i am purposely catching them, and im not.

i did send an email to the local DNR officers welcoming them to ask me any questions, check what i have been using, and i would even tell/show them exactly what happened, and even show them where i cast.

i am just so stressed with this already. it is legal to take a few quick pictures, and measure, accidently caught, out of season fish. but they are bashing me like i commited a crime for taking a quick picture of the fish before letting it go...

i think its just stupid, i basiclly cant even fish without getting in trouble anymore. and fishing is suppose to be my way of getting away from all my family issues and stuff...

i just dont know what to do anymore... any ideas?

It's funny too me. While your being hassled for that, other people take big ole boats with giant nets and suck the spawning fish out of the shallows by the hundreds and they don't get in any trouble. .

They’ll protect one persons rights and trample all over another’s.

If you’re truly not targeting those fish then I wouldn’t worry about it. I catch pike all the time when fishing dogfish. I caught three bass on center lake last week when I was targeting crappie.
It happens.

I’m sure someone disagrees on this one though.

logan- i am not really worried about it. its just so stressful being bashed for that, especially if it is one of your biggest fish of that species, but others wont let you be proud of your catch

hxcfisherman, I too have been recently blamed for catching fish out of season. I have been fishing crappies by an outlet and have been catching many northerns as they make there yearly trek to spawning grounds. I took pictures of two of my biggest northerns, a 17 and 19 pound fish. I immediatley released the fish, but local landowners on the lake were upset with me catching this fish "accidentaly". If the DNR doesn't have a problem with it then keep going after your crappies and bowfin.

I bet I can guess what site your having problems with.

Here is what I would do...

Forget them and go catch some fish. If you are truly within the law then don't worry about what others say.

If you want a good rough fish spot check out Pool 2 on the Mississippi. You can use whatever bait you like as walleye are open year round in those parts all though you do have to let them go after the picture.

Those are some nice fish by the way.

Oh and by the way. Welcome to MFP. You might find this site runs by a different set of rules that you might appreciate.

If your sitting in the same spot hammering the walleyes then I would probably have a problem with it, and so would the CO if he was watching, even if it is accidental. He wouldn't do anything except tell you to move to a different area. If you are moving around and accidentally catching walleyes, then don't worry about it, it happens. Nice wallies by the way.

retired on osakis- thanks, that is a good thought. i have not been getting them in the same place, the creek goes on for about 200 feet before it becomes muddy, and filled with unpenetrable thickets. and the lagoon has about a 1 mile surface area.
