This has been a great month for fishing, thats for sure! The reports of walleye and smallmouth caught have been numerous and the northern pike news is not slacking either. |
The first week in June was wet, rainy and cool but the fishing was hot! The Basswood area was constantly producing some excellent fishing success stories.
Dale Holdmans party, from Blaine MN started out in Fall Lake and made their way to Indiana Lake. Ive been coming up to the Boundary Waters for many years and I have never seen the fishing like we had up in Indiana Lake the last few days! The weather wasnt the best, but the fishing sure was! Dale and his group caught a hefty amount of smallmouth and northern pike.
Another group also started at Fall Lake and found a great amount of fishing success in Pipestone, near Louis narrows. These lucky fellows reported that on their first day, in the first 2 hours, they caught over 60 walleye! Of course, most were released. A few were kept and eaten for dinner. They also reported catching lots of smallies, some weighing in around 3-4 pounds.
The second week in June was also good for fishing the Basswood area. Though while a lot of fish were caught, there were not as many boats out there like usual. It probably had to do with the quantity of rain we received that week.
Canoers were finding it easier to travel on some of the small creeks that week. One group was over at the Crab Lake area and found the creek into Maxine pretty easy. They were amazed at the size of the largemouth bass they found there. That afternoon the four fishermen caught nine really nice sized lunkers, all at least 4 pounds. A couple of fish were kept for a tasty shore lunch and the rest were put back in the lake.
With all the fishing going on in Basswood, it was amazing that most of the big walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass caught that week, were registered as being caught in Shagawa Lake, Elys hometown lake!
The third week of June arrived bearing blue skies, leaving the rain behind. The sun came out, the temperatures soared and the fishing? Well, nice hot and sunny days do not do much for walleye fishing however there were still some nice ones caught.
Nothing huge but there was a nice one, 6 pounds, caught by Dan Kirkman of Virginia, MN and caught in Twin Lake. A nice northern pike, weighing in at 13 pounds 8 ounces was discovered in Burntside Lake. The Haaversen kids (Caty, Erik & Rachel) residents of Ely, brought in their stringer of northerns. They used some pike sucker minnows to gather up their catch. The biggest one on the stringer was 3 pounds 2 ounces and it was the biggest fish these young kids had ever caught and the pride was evident in their smiling faces as they posed for the picture.
Bill Fester of Melrose Park, IL had the time of his life out on Fall Lake that week. He kept a couple nice walleyes and smallmouth but put a lot of the same back in the lake. Two of the ones he released were a 20 walleye and a 18.5 smallmouth.
Something not seen often (or at least registered) from Miners Lake was a nice sized, 1# 3 oz. crappie. Bailey Drechsler of Ely was the one who brought that one in to be weighed and entered into the Ely fishing contest.
Bonnie Hylton of Ely also fished one evening in Miners Lake and had herself a nice rainbow trout dinner that night.
All the winners of the month of May fishing contest caught them on the nearby Ely lakes; Little Long for a monster 12 pound 10 ounce walleye, Burntside and its 19 pound 8 ounce northern pike, Shagawa had a 5 pound 10 ounce lunker smallie and Burntside again, this time for a 10 pound lake trout.
Yes, the sun had come out and the warmth spread through Ely. Maybe the fishing slowed down a bit but it was glorious to be out in a canoe or boat, enjoying our remarkable wilderness area and basking in the suns rays while we tossed our baits to tempt the fish.
Why dont you come up and join us? Experience the Ely difference!
