I was thinking of going and doing some shore fishing on lake phalen. Is it still too early for the fish to come shallow?

Its never too early. The fish might not be that shallow yet but its still fun wetting a line.

If you can find areas with a dark bottom on the north side of the lake you'll likely find the warmest water and it will probably be your best bet for some shallow pannies.

Let us know how you do, I don't like far from Phalen.

Another option if Phalen is still cold you could try either Como or Loeb lake, only a few miles to the west of Phalen. THey are smaller lakes and have been ice free for awhile now. You might find a little warmer water.

I used to fish Phalen, when I lived in that area. You can fish that little round lake that attaches to Phalen fairly early. It seems to melt quicker. There are some panfish and bass there. Of course you can't keep the bass yet, but you can catch and release. Also. I used to fish right by that cement drainage thing on the East side. I used to throw way out and I kept getting bites on minnows. Whatever it was would rip my line up every time. I assume it was Muskie. I have heard they are in there. Good luck, let us know how you do. I have been itching to get out on the lakes myself.

Bass season being closed means you can't go throwing 1/4oz spinnerbaits. You can not target those fish. Keep your baits small then you are less kilely to get tagged.

A few years back I went to vadnais lake on the north end and did really good on gills. Pretty sure you can't intentionally fish for a spiecies out of season unless otherwise noted. I love reading the dnr regs book. You have to read everything twice because it is worded so funny.

Didn't mean to imply you can target bass out of season, but I did unintentionally catch them while targeting crappie with live bait. You can't really control what chooses to bite your minnow.

My son and I had some pretty good shore fishing in Missouri 2 weeks ago at Lake of the Ozarks on the annual golf and fish getaway. Crappie hit good this time of year right under the docks or bridges and the bass were hungry this trip for some reason, no need for a boat. Also got down to Bass Pro Shop's mothership in Springfield for the first time.

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone has fished Round Lake in Eden Prairie, it is just south west of the intersection of Valley View Rd and Eden Prairie Rd, right across the street from the high school. I know they have a public dock out, but I haven't seen anyone fishing from it yet. I would love to know what kind of fish are in that lake or if anyone has fished it.

Ok, I move around a lot. I used to live near that lake too. I fished it and got some Crappie, somewhat small but that was a few years back. There were also a few bass in there.

It's definately not too early.. I just went out to a little spot in Lino Lakes and caught 7 crappies in 20 minutes.

Some others were out at my spot with a group of four guys and a girl. I have no idea how they found the spot because for years no one has fished it except me and I keep it on the down low. They all kept their limit. They were catching their last fish when I left...50 crappies. Most of them were pretty small I think.

This spot is only about 6 feet deep at the deepest so I guess some of the crappies are movin in to shallower waters.

Oh yeah, one more thing.. Only a couple fish were caught on minnows. The rest on small green jig heads with little plastics.!
