So I was reading an artile online that was explaining that a good time to catch BIG pike in shallow water, which I understand to mean, reasonable depths for spoons and other crankbaits, that you want to be on the water before the the surface temp exceeds about 65 degrees. The reason being the hight temps force the larager size pike into deeper water. A would yo agree with this theory, and b, the most important question. How do I find out ahead of time when that time period is. I am going on a early season trip to park rapids MN, and am trying to duduce the right time. Over the last 3 years my friend and I have went on 3 week long trips to the longville/walker/Marcel area and have not caught anything bigger than 29 inches. Help us break the 30 inch barrier. crazy smiley

In the northern half of the state you'll probably see the most big pike in shallow water in May and into June. Around that time of the year I look for shallow bays 3-6 foot range and I start tossing spoons and spinner baits.

Once the water warms up and the big pike head out you can still catch them you just need to start moving progressivly deeper. If you arrive in early to mid june and the water temps are a little above 65 move just a little deeper as the big pike probably haven't gone real deep yet.

If you get there in July or August then I would look to main lake structure near deep water since the will be favoring deep water at that time.
