Lake of the Woods South Shore Fishing/Ice & Snow Report Sportsmans Lodge
2/18/09
Fishing Report The fishing is fantastic! The guides have diligently been moving houses and scoping out new areas in the past 2 weeks and it has paid off! We currently have houses in 28-35 of water just 9 miles from the lodge as well as up north on the reefs 17 miles from the lodge. Our houses have been pulling in 30-60 fish a day on average. Guests have reported many nice slot walleyes, a few wall hangers to add some big fun and plenty of good eating walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch to fill their limit to bring home. What more can you ask for? Will it last! I am betting on YES! Why? The doldrums of winter and cloudy days are passing by and the last half of the winter season is bringing in more sun which as I have said before, the sun is a powerful ingredient in great walleye ice fishing on Lake of the Woods. Ahhhh
. nothing better than a nice warm sunny day on the lake with the fish house door open to take in the awesome outdoor lake scenery all while pulling in walleyes. Joe received his bragging rights this week & he is sharing a tip! Joe from Inver Grove Heights caught a nice 29 walleye on Feb 15 in 32 of water, while fishing on his annual trip to Sportsmans Sleeper houses. Joe was using a green Crappie Bug. The same type of jig that his brother had used 2 years ago, when he caught his 30 1/2 walleye, except his jig was fluorescent in color. These guys once again had a blast and cant wait for next time. Fish houses out until March 31! Dont forget on Lake of the Woods we have our fish houses out until March 31! Plenty of time left to come on up, and dont forget about our Annual Snowmobile Rally on Oak Island March 13 & 14 & our Annual Mardi Gras Party, March 28 at our Rainy River location. Ice Conditions We still are maintaining 36 of ice on the well traveled areas of Lake of the Woods specifically in the areas we travel and marked trails. Last week the 3 day thaw and rain only melted snow, not ice. This left the ride to the fish house a little rough, but recent cold temperatures and snow fall of 6 inches have now changed that all back to normal conditions. Snow & Trail Report We have snow again! Last week was a little tough on our snow as we lost 8-12 inches, but just in the past two days we have gained 6 inches back to top off the 12 inches we had left. Lake Trails The lake itself has spotty areas of snow due to some wind, but the groomed trail still is maintaining the packed snow. The lake trail from Wheelers Point to Oak Island, Wheelers Point to Warroad and Warroad to Oak Island will all be groomed starting Thursday morning to provide optimum conditions for the weekend ahead. Land Trails The land trails are shaping back up too and groomers are back out. The trails should be back to normal by the weekend. Until next week....
