The bill was heard Monday in the House Game, Fish and Forestry Division. Similar legislation has passed the House before but has met opposition in the Senate.

Frankly, when I am out fishing and I have a couple of the kids with me, I cannot even handle my own line, much less two. Also, does having an extra line really produce more fish? Kind of hard to jig with two hands. The articles states that the resort owners and others in the industry are pushing for this, but to tell you the truth, I don't think passing this type of bill is going to help the fishing community. How about we build up the fish population so we can get rid of some of the slots? In the long run, I think we would all be better off.

Just my 2 cents worth...

If someone could show that two lines per angler hurts the fish population (which I doubt) then I would stand against the idea..

but I really like the idea of being able to cast around while I wait for my bobber to do it's thing..especially while shore fishing.

Once you reach your limit you’re done, at least that's the way it's supposed to be. If by using two lines you do it faster, you’re still only catching your limit.

Webdude I could not agree more. They need to work on slot limits and not extra lines. I've spent to many years (recently) on Mille Lacs letting 20" to 23" go, when you should be bringing them home to eat. How many guys have gone up there and let nice fish go, because of the slot and go home with just pictures of nice fish. If the resort owner's want business they need to find a way to change the slot size and leave the extra lines alone.

Can you imagine Mille Lacs on opener with everybody using two lines. Either stay home or bring your bullet proof jacket!!!

The legislator sponsoring the bill, Al Junke, said they have two lines in Wisconsin and it hasn't hurt anything. Well I don't know where he fishes in Wisconsin but I quit fishing there over a decade ago because of poor fishing. I could only keep two walleye on some lakes and the muskie were little stinkers not worth casting for. If you want tighter restrictions on Minnesota lakes then by all means support two lines. We have the best fishing in the lower 48 right now. Why allow two lines and ruin a good thing.

In my experience, it is very rare to find a legislator that either fishes or understands the impact of bills they pass that concern fishing. Maybe Mr. Junke could come here and explain what exactly the benefits would be for a bill like this to pass. Like I said before... this will not benefit the resorts at all, especially on lakes like Mille Lacs where you can't keep what you catch. All this is going to do is impact the mortality of the fish, that by law, have to be released after you catch them. In fact, a bill like this might actually hurt some fisheries.

I really don't see the benefit of this bill. If you want to fish with two lines, move to Wisconsin. I am sure they would appreciate more pressure on their lakes smile smiley

I agree WebDude. Two lines isn't the answer. If they want to help the resort owners, then pass legislation that will improve habitat that will ultimately increase the quantity and quality of fish that people catch. Let them take enough home to feed their family, especially in today's economy. There was a group of four of us that fished Canada every year until they started telling us we couldn't take our fish home. We haven't been back since and can honestly say we really don't miss it.
