Well here we go most of you know im a very helpful person and am a very avid ice fisherman. i can honestly say i love the open water just as much but have my spots for ice fihing to get into some great fish. my plan if i choose to move forward with it was to start my own little guide service out of the cities on the ice land some city slickers on fish introduce the sport to new enthusiasts and make a little money on the side. not in it for the money but if im supporting i need a little compensation. as all of you know my maps have been sent to dozens of people with success just wondering if this would be a good idea or should i hold off with the way economically things are going all input and critisism will be taken im har headed so i can take it.
thanks for you time,
ice

I have thought similarly and it would be great however the cityets i belive need more than some dude like them who has good spots, ron Shara interviewed a guide this past summer and the name was blonde in a boat! a female guide, how great would it be to have a staff of women doing your guiding, with cell phones and gps it could be done!

good luck better fishing!

I think with our economy in the tank getting people to find other forms of inexpensive relaxation, such as ice fishing, would be a great idea. Take last weekend for example, if you had any understanding of the sport you could have just driven out on any local lake with a jigglestick and a pack of grubs. There were plenty of holes open so no auger was even needed!

In my opinion its a very tough time for people to be forking out the extra cash for a guide. Sometimes it just not the spot but the guide sitting there telling stories and keeping things interesting with facts about the area. The problem I have with the cities is that any will just pull up and plop down right next to you. I used one of your maps (Thank You) for bald eagle but was litterly overrun by people within the hour. The guys I took had a fun time just being out there. I think you would make more taking people to special lakes and setting them up and sittin with them showing them your style of fishing and how to catch them. I get the biggest response from people that way. Good Luck!

Check with the DNR. Each state will have different regulations. In some states, all that is needed is a valid fishing license, a business license for your service, and an insurance bond. The insurance bond is a good idea even if it is not required. Some states require a state license, though there are some states where this is only required if you fish out of a boat. If you are taking people in a boat or vehicle and putting yourself forward as the outdoor expert it is important to carry insurance for any personal liability. Get familiar with the competitions prices and what is included. If you plan on going out on any border lakes, you may need a Coast Guard Captains License. Check with the DNR. Really, it is a business and you must treat it as such. It is one thing to think it would be fun to charge people to come along with you fishing, it is a whole other thing to treat it as a professional business.

In a tough economy it might be tough to get people to pay much for ice fishing guide services. Like it was stated in other responses it's too easy to move in on someone else. But with that said it is fun and rewarding to help other anglers get started. This can be done by getting involved with the DNR education program called Minn Aqua. They are usually looking for people to sponsor or help out with their ice fishing clinics. It is a blast to show first timers how to use a locator and jig stick to catch a fish thru a hole in the ice. So if you want to help new people and get a name for yourself as an ice fishing guide you might want to contact the Minn Aqua people. Who knows it might grow into a business once the economy recovers. Dave

I think you got somet pretty good advice here.

There is alot to consider and if you really want to make an effort to do it full time then I would suggest getting inolved in as many fishing programs/groups/associations/charities as possible.

One of the hardest parts of the guiding buiness seems to be credibility. There are so many guide services out there that seem to have been concieved of over a case of Miller Light, these guys probaly thought that what the heck I can catch fish I could be a guide to. You will need a way to seperate yourself from these guys if you want to stand out from the crowd.

If you can put people on fish and have built credibility through involvement and affiliations with many well know groups you may find it easier to find clients. You may also want to condsider entering some tournaments, if you can win or atleast finsish well in them it will give you even more credibitly.

the last thing I would suggest is a way to communicate your credibility. Have you thought about how you would get your name out there? You'll need to advertise some how, a website is a good idea and will allow you to display your credibility but you will still need a way to get potential clients to view your website. That means advertising, and outside of this site it usually isn't free.

If you want to be successful at it there is alot to think about and it may take a few dollars to get it going. But remember the more you put into something the more you'll get out of it in the end.
