The Minnetonka Lake Association has been coming up with ideas like this since milfoil was first found in the lake. Now they are concerned with Zebra mussels and other invasives’.

A plan like this comes down hard on the public, access, time and $$$ . However I still see quite a few boats, pontoons, sailboats, jet ski trailers going in and out of lakes with quite a bit of vegetation on them. Clumps of weeds on trailers, water in bait buckets, bilges, livewells can all be transports.

I spoke with Ron Payer, MN DNR Fisheries Chief last night and discovered that over 20 lakes and rivers in MN now test positive for Zebra Mussel veligers. A female zebra mussel can produce 30,000 to 1,000,000 eggs in one year! The fertilized eggs quickly develop into free-swimming larvae called veligers (VEL-i-jers). Veligers are smaller than periods! They feed on tiny phytoplankton and begin to grow shells. The water currents can cause veligers to travel great distances.

Somehow we need to get the message across to all boaters. I’ve heard a lot of different opinions from fishing guys. Most of it is “Ya But”

Ya but their going to be spread anyways so why bother, Ya but maybe they make the fishing better, Ya but birds also can spread them, Ya but I’m a member of a fishing club and know all about this, Ya but maybe something will eat them Yada Yada Yada.

I oppose the current Lake Minnetonka Association solution, yet can’t help but wonder what it will take to get the public onboard with taking better care of our lakes.

Yabuts belong in the forest. LOL

I remember so many commercials explaining that this is a problem that we need to help take care of. The public has been warned and now so many people don't think they have to do anything about it. I always check my boat and trailer for these things. I even let some know when they have milfoil hanging on the trailer. Once I saw a guy get quite angry when another told him he should remove the weeds from his prop.
I guess they just think that everyone else is responsible for keeping our lakes clean so they can use them whenever they see fit. These will be the same people that complain the loudest when they get hit up with an inspection and get charged for it.
