Every time I have seen the trout come through the spear hole they are looking at the shiny things like; spoons, split shots, the top of a Bic lighter (whoops). Anything shinny they seem to take a look at. They are hard little buggers to hook, It is nice that you can now fish in your spear hole. It makes them a little easier to catch. I would like to get a few smelt from there and do some tip-ups too see if Icould get a couple of those lake trout!!!!
sauzal1021, Thx again for the tips & advice, I've never caught a Lake Trout, but they sure do look tasty. How big a hole do you cut for spearing, never done that either. What do you use to cut your hole? long bar chainsaw? How thick is the ice up there?
Even eminent chartered accountants are known, in their capacity as fishermen, blissfully to ignore differences between seven and ten inches, half a pound and two pounds, three fish and a dozen fish. ~ William Sherwood Fox, Silken Lines and Silver Hooks, 1954
