Ice Report The chill of winter is moving in. The ice has taken over the bays, small tributaries and the shores of the Rainy River and Lake of the Woods. The temperatures have been hovering right around the freezing mark for daytime highs and settling as low as 5 above at night. The water temperature is now a chilly 33 degrees and ready to stiffen up soon. The forecast for next week shows cooler temperatures moving in. This will surely start the major ice formation we are waiting for. A lot can happen within a weeks time, so check back next week for our report and watch our webcams from our Rainy River and Oak Island locations, up to the minute actual sights of the ice formation. Lake of the Woods has been known to freeze up with 12 inches of ice within a 7-10 day period of time, so a Dec 6 (Rainy River location) & Dec 15 (Oak Island location) start date is still not out of the question. Even eminent chartered accountants are known, in their capacity as fishermen, blissfully to ignore differences between seven and ten inches, half a pound and two pounds, three fish and a dozen fish. ~ William Sherwood Fox, Silken Lines and Silver Hooks, 1954
