So we are planning a trip up in January to see my in-laws and hopefully get out ice fishing. We didn't come up last year b/c we had a new baby, but my stepson is anxious to get out again. We had a great time two years ago, watching him run after flags popping up was a blast, and the winter before that, which was his first time ice fishing (and my first in probably 20 years). His friends down here in Fla. didn't quite understand how he was fishing through the ice
Anyone else starting their augers to make sure they run, checking out equipment, making sure rats didn't chew holes in fish houses, or otherwise getting the itch?

I know that I am getting excited for first ice here in New England but we won't see it until December or January...I have been getting the stuff out and looking at what needs to be bought yet before the upcoming season...one thing that i am able to do to try my equipment out before first ice is that I take my kayak out and fish vertically over the side with all of my ice gear, flasher and camera as well and baits that I use all throughout the winter season...this for me will probably start around Thanksgiving and I do this all the way till ice up...keep watching MFP as I will make posts with photo's and video's as to what and how I am doing the kayak fishing ice style...

NE Metro, WBL/Vadnais Heights area.
Assuming we come and the weather cooperates, I am not sure where we will fish. Three yrs. ago we hit Bald Eagle, Chisago and one other area lake that escapes me and did well on pannies. Two yrs. ago we went somewhere a little further north with some other friends and fished both for pannies and for larger creatures w/tip-ups and caught a large variety, my stepson caught his first walleye through the ice and I caught my largest northern. I have been sworn to secrecy as to where but its a popular lake, we just fished somewhere away from everyone else.
The best part for me was every time a flag would pop my stepson would take off running towards the tip-up. He wiped out a couple of times and it was hilarious watching him slide across the ice. The falls didn't hurt a kid although I probably would have been in serious pain for days. He picked up the techniques of fishing w/tip-ups, including how to keep his footing on ice w/little or no snow, rather quickly and by the end of the trip was a pro. It was one of the best fishing experiences I have had and I am very hopeful we'll get to do it again this year.
