I've heard rumors for a long time.. but today it happened.. after the storms left our area up here I went down to see how fast the river was moving. Threw out a Rapala X-Rap, let the ripples calm down and twitched it once and it got hit hard.. it was 8:30 tonight (an hour ago) and I thought I had a 7 or 8 lb pike but it started "barrel rolling" a couple feet from the sore and decided it wanted to swim more. No clue on the weight, I didn't pick it up.. I jsut wanted to get the trebles out and put it back in the water.. but it did fight more than I thought catfish did, maybe 8-10 lbs at best.. girth about football size.

My first ever catfish and I didn't even wanna catch one.. Someone remind me next time to bring my camera.. I always leave it home since I go out alone a lot of the time.

Nice job on the cat! To land a catfish, the easiest way (if you don't have a net) is to stick your hand in their mouth. Their teeth are similar to a bass. They might scrape you a bit, but they aren't going to cut you. But instead of lipping them like a bass, you'll actually put your thumb on the underside of the mouth and put all four fingers inside and hold on. Of course on a bait like a rap, you'll have to watch out for the hooks. But you don't have to be afraid of their teeth. Nothing more than a few minor abrasions is all that you'll suffer.

Again, congrats on the nice fish!
