I HAVE A 1996 40 HP 2CYL FORCE BY MERCURY ON A TRACKER BOAT THAT HAS A BAD T/T CYLINDER(I THINK) THE T/T MOTOR SEEMS TO BE FINE. THE LOWERING OF THE MOTOR IS FINE BUT I ACTUALLY HAVE TO NEAR STOP TO RAISE TE MOTOR. MERCURY SAYS THEY CAN'T REBUILD THE ASSEMBLY BUT I CONTEND IF MAN PUT IT TOGETHER, MAN CAN TAKE IT APART. ANYONE KNOW SOMEONE THAT CAN DO A REBUILD OR MAYBE HAS A REASONABLE GOOD USED UNIT? MERCURY WANTS $800 PLUS. AFTER MARKET SELLS ONE FOR AROUND 5 BUT I WOULD PREFER TO GO ORIGINAL. THANKS FOR LOOKING. HOGJAWS MY EMAIL IS DMYHRE@MCHSI.COM.
I would check the electric system 1st! Almost every issue I have had and fixed has been with the wires - check the ground 1st - almost always the issue!
As far as rebuilding the hyd unit - this is pretty easy if you have the correct tools - if not - remove it from the boat (saves you $$) and bring to a hyd rebuilder - they can replace the seals and have ya on the water in little time - Good luck
Enjoy the Experience!
