Well...this will be my first season in the Minnesota woods and I'll be paired up with my son on his first 'legit' season. He's been in the woods down south with me for years but this is the first year he'll be carrying his own licence and rifle.

I live in Forest Lake and am looking at the Carlos Avery WMA and Sherburne NWR. Does anyone here have any experience on these public lands? Does it get crazy crowded all over or only near the roads?

I like to get in deep and set up early.

It is one of the most popular areas in the area and it doesn't matter how deep you go in you will still see people.

How far away does someone have to get from the metro to find some solitude?

Weekdays in the metro can be doable but don't get your hopes up to be the only one out there, but it can happen...if it rains smile smiley I tend to drive 3-5 hrs for a weekender just like many others I guess.
