My husband and I haven't explored Minn. much so next week we are off to do just that. Now, where to go? We are thinking in the Vermilion lake area. Any suggestions? WE would like to catch fish--we are not hard core fisher people. Just love the water and hooking something. Panfish, walleye, bass... Looking for moderate priced accomodations, nothing fancy but would like a place on the water with a great view and loons.
We would appreciate any suggestions or recommendations of favorite places.
Thanks!!

Hey sportsmom2x2,
Welcome to My Fishing Pals. Glad to have you aboard!
That's going to be a tough question to answer. I can give some of my favorite lakes, but that's just it... they are MY favorite lakes. In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, you can fish just about anywhere and have a great time. There are a lot of choices out there
Around the Metro, I fish Bald Eagle, White Bear, Big Marine and other lakes in the north. Out of town, you got Mille Lacs, Leech, Vermilion, etc. I go up into the BWCA once in a while... and yes... there are good lakes in the Ely area. Sometimes I want to get a dartboard and throw darts at a map and just fish where it lands. Not to mention the rivers...

I have seen mixed reviews from some people on this site on the lake I am suggesting, but Spider Lake in Itasca County is very fun. I have never caught a trophy anything, but there are lots of walleyes and pike. Catching fish has been easy and fun. The lake itself is beutiful. It is pretty large, but has so many bays and is so eraticly shaped it feels smaller than it is (which I like). This is not far from Scenic Hwy 38 just north of Grand Rapids. There are tons of scenic lakes and placed to stay on Hwy 38. The town of Marcel is small, is small but nice and is centrally located to tons of lakes. There are also a lot of nice lakes in longville which is north of brainerd about an hour. The town is a great mix of conveineces and old time charm. The coffee shop even has wireless internet for those we need to plug in.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I think our route is going to be Duluth to Cloquet (we're casino bugs too), to the Lake Vermillion area and/or to Ely area. So far we have found accomodation possiblities on Lake Vermillion and Big Lake around Ely.
Any recommendations for small resorts or cabins or lakeside motels? We are not fancy folks, just want to enjoy the great Minnesota lakes, fishing and nature watching. Oh and listen to Loons. If we hear loons as we drift off ot sleep our vacation is a success.
Thanks again. Good fishing to all.

Welcome to the site. I highly reccommend Ely area. I grew up there and pretty much any body of water that you toss a line in your gonna catch something. Check out www.northernairlodge.com my friends recently started managing the resort, very nice place.
Take a kid fishing, it'll keep you young.

My guess is that you have never camped out on a lake with loons in the area.
My last time in the BWCA we had a pair sit just off of our campsite all night. They don't seem so majestic at 3am. Man can they get LOUD. Tough to scare off to.
But from a distance or through a closed window it is a great sounds to sleep to.
I think you are heading in the right direction. Can't go wrong up there. There are also some places in the Duluth area but I don't think they can compare to Ely or Vermillion
