Minnesota launched an ambitious advertising campaign last spring to try to stem the shrinking percentage of Minnesotans who fish.

The ad blitz included direct mail, electronic billboards and radio ads that tried to lure people back to angling for the May opener.

But despite that effort, fishing license sales are down this year.

Rest of the story...

I read that from yesterdays paper, but I was confused as to them saying they had this campaign to get people back into fishing. Is it just me or did anyone else NOT see these billboards and what not...

If they want more people to fish, they should let anglers use two poles in summer. You usually get more action when you can use one pole for bait and another for casting.

Daily fishing tournaments on city lakes wouldn't hurt either. There was an article in a Wisconsin paper last year about a teacher who started a school fishing club. I'm surprised Minnesota schools and the city parks don't push fishing more.

Personally, I think they should raise the age for kids to fish without a license to 18. After they're 18, they can buy one. As it is now, a lot of kids stop fishing when they hit 16.

It's a small deal, but...

I like Odin's school fishing club idea. Screw the gaming clubs where the kids rot inside all day staring at computers and tvs, get them outside doing something productive!

Does the U of Minnesota even have any teams in the NCAA (ok it's not NCAA but still) fishing league? A lot of midwest colleges are in a 'tour' and have big tourneys.

Even a BAD day of fishing is better than a good day of work; paydays excluded!
