So, yesterday, I went back to Bald Eagle. This time, though, I had a fishing partner, a 14-year-old boy my wife and I are mentoring. He'd never been fishing in his life. He'd never been in a boat in his life.
Well, it turned out that he was a little scared of being in a little boat on a big lake, so we fished in the launch ramp cove, over in the lily pads. Fish are there, too, but it's not fished much.
After a lot of patient instruction, he started whacking the sunnies with a tiny plastic worm on a tiny jig under a bobber. The biggest one was about 8", so he didn't do too badly. We had a great time.
The highlight? Aside from helping a new angler learn to fish and spending an afternoon on the water, I was fishing with that same tiny jig setup on a 4.5' ultralight rod. Bam! Bobber down, and on the end of the line was not a sunny.
A while later, I lipped a 3 lb. largemouth. The kid turned down the offer to battle this behemoth, so I guess that was my reward for taking a kid fishing or something.
There's a longer description of the day over at my blog at the link below.

Excellent to get a kid out on the water, especially a kid new to fishing. I applaud your efforts, MineralMan!

It's fun to introduce kids to fishing. They have a good time, and it's rewarding for the adult, too.
Most of us have neighbor kids who don't have parents who fish. It's easy enough to take them out. Most parents will be happy for you to do it, if they know you. Just be safe at all times.
I recommend just one kid at a time, though. More than that is too much of a challenge, since they need lots of help at first.
