So, my wife and other in-laws have given me a day with the Griz for my 63rd birthday this year. I certainly know his reputation, and we'll be fishing on either the St. Croix or the Mississippi.

Has anyone here ever fished with the guy? What's he like as a guide and fishing companion? On Bear Facts and Fish Tales, he sounds a little gruff, which is fine, but I'd like to know what to expect.

Sorry I haven't been around the site much this year. I'll try to correct that.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to it a lot. I'm sure I'll learn a lot from the Griz. He's a master fisherman. I'll do a little report after the day here, and a longer one on my fishing blog.

You won't find a better guide for the rivers then the Grizz.

I listen to him all the time on the radio. He seems to know what he is talking about. I wish you luck when going out with him.

In the late 80s, I got the opportunity to go out with Babe and his brother Dave. I was working in a studio with them and they invited my partner and me out for a day on Mille Lacs. My partner and I caught nothing, Dave caught nothing and Babe caught 2 small perch. They just were not biting that day. It just goes to show ya you can't force fish on your line. Funny, Dave kept the perch and fed them to his cats. One thing I learned about TV fishing shows is that you go through a lot of film to get that half hour of good fishing on the air.

Good luck, and remember what WD said is very true. I remember watching Bob Izumi's show once when I was a kid, they were targeting muskies and didn't catch one. Not a single fish. It made for bad TV, but I can only imagine how many hrs. they put in before they hung it up.

Well, the way I look at it is the same way I look at all fishing. Any day on the water is better than any day not on the water. Griz has tons of stories, no doubt, so if the fishing's lousy, I'll get to hear some of them.

If the fishing's good, well, that'll be a bonus, and I'll get a chance to learn about the river. I still haven't taken my little boat on either river, but I'd like to, and this may help me get out there.

It's a wonderful gift from my wife's family, and I'm expecting to enjoy the heck out of it.

I am sure The Griz will get you on fish. I think he is probably one of the best river guides in the state. Fish or no fish, the opportunity to at least gain a bit more knowledge will make the trip worthwhile.

I know it's not an opportunity I would pass up...

I know this is a bit off topic, but MineralMan... I just checked out your blog, as per a suggestion from 'Dude, and I have to tell you it is excellent! I especially like the latest "Retro Fishing -- What's Old is New Again." You have great skill in your writing and I ended up on there for an hour or so reading. Not only can I relate, but a lot of the articles really make you think. "Urban Kids and Fishing" was another great one... that actually happened to me, though it wasn't stinkbait we passed around.

Good job on the site...

Thanks very much, Ted. I'm going to be trying to update the blog more regularly. I've been sort of remiss about that in the past.

Of course, as soon as I say that, my site's server is very, very slow this morning. Normally, they fix that right away.
