Hello all I am new to this site and also new to catfishing. I have been going to the Coon Rapids dam in coon Rapids and have only tried using crawlers with a bobber. I have had decent results but i would appreciate any tips I could get on catfishing in general.Thank you!

Hey there a good way to catch some monster cats is to use frogs. Live frogs.Put it on a big hook , hooking it through the mouth

I am not a catfisherman, but I seem to recall that smelly bait, like chicken livers, works. I also seem to remember seeing someone that used small bullheads? Didn't the regs change so that bigger bullheads can be used? I have caught them (accidentially) on just about everything.

I have also recently heard that using bullheads work. I have also been told that if you cut off there wiskers and there fins so that they bleed a little but are still alive to struggle but cant swim to well is a good thing to do. But what I was wondering was is using bullheads for bait legal? I know that you arent supposed to use game fish for bait but does a bullhead qualify as a game fish? Also, can you buy live frogs at a bait shop.... I know that it would be eaisier to catch them but i dont know where i could go aroung my house to get them.

Sorry I'm late..... smile smiley

The area you are fishing is all Channel Cats so Bullheads which are legal to use up to 7"s in length will be of no use to you up in the Coon Rapids area. Bullheads are used for Flathead Catfish you won't find many Flathead Catfish if any at all above the St Anthony Falls Dams near Downtown MPLS.

For your area If I was targeting Channel Cats I would suggest Cut bait, Suckers work best in my opinion along with Moon-Eye or Golden-eye if you can find or catch them. I would cut the pieces into 1 or 2" chunks, but like posted above Liver, Shrimp, or stink bait will work.
I have also had good success with 4 or 5 fathead minnows on a hook sometimes I'll cut the tails off of the minnows for added effect and scent!

I would get rid of the Bobber and use a slip sinker in the 1/2 OZ to 2 ounce range depening on the current you are fishing, use a 7" to 12" leader and let it sit on the bottom and wait for a Big Channel to come and slam it!

Good Luck!

i have been catching a ton cats on berkeley gulp, 5in smelt. with a 1/2 oz blue jig and hook it right through the mouth.cast it out then let it sit on the bottom for about 30 seconds then slowly reel it(while you shake the bait)about 5ft and do the whole thing over again until it gets close to you.just keep doing that. good luck
