Anyone fish the chain this past week? Reason I ask is we spent this past week on the lake. Our family has had a cabin on upper Whitefish for 30 years. Usually the middle two weeks of June are some of the best Walleye fishing of the year. This year it was as bad as I have ever seen. Tried shallow, deep and in between and got only sunburn. The places that usually hold fish were dead. Could not even find any fish markings on the depth finder. Now I have seen this lake steadily go downhill but this is absurd. Maybe its time for everyone who fishes Whitefish to ask the DNR what is going on. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Welcome to the site, Delta Dude,

Whiteface for the past couple of weeks has been really slow. Some are blaming it on all the recent rains. Funny though, Gull is reporting as doing really good right now. I think you just happened to be on the wrong lake at the wrong time. Dagget and Pine have been doing very well for northerns and bass and lots of pannies being caught.

The White Fish Chain has become so infested with little northerns in recent years that they probably ate all the walleye. When is the DNR going to put a northern slot on White Fish to get some quality fish back in there?

I've fished the chain for 30 years. This year, like everywhere else, spring was very late, and waters high. I fished opening week, and saw very little, but got some northern on the eastern end of Little Pine. I believe I posted a report on that at the time. I'm heading back up near the end of the month. As far as smaller northerns, I would concur, altho two years ago my group caught a 6 pounder, a couple of 4 pounders, and some three's. If I go back 15 to 20 years, every trip we would catch and release many a fine fish. Kept some to eat as well. Fishing seems to get tougher all over the chain, and it appears like I'm seeing more "snakes". Is it fishing pressure? I don't know, but I have been around the campground in Crosslake and seen some teeny weeny walleye and northern being cleaned or tied onto stringers. I mean really small. I'm not picking on campers, just observing in a public arena. Having watched other lakes rebound after slot limits and some pro-active management by the DNR leads me to believe the Whitefish chain could use some help. Every now and then you read how the DNR will net some huge old walleyes around Pine River, and many good sized fish in the nets as well. Either the fish are getting smarter, or we're getting dumber.

I'd vote affirmative for slot limits on Walleye and Northern in a second. smile smiley
