Well... Once Again...here we go...

If you have been visiting this forum for a while, you know that every once in a while we post statistics on how the site is doing. We do this because we feel that we are all a team here and everone deserves to know some of the information that pertains to this site. The site is 4 years and 8 months old and considering how young the site is... Well... it appears we are doing great! If this stuff bores you... just pretend this post isn't here. smile smiley

Don't know where to start so I will just dig in!

May of 2008 was our busiest month ever!!!!! We broke over 101,000 visits on this month! Yippee Skippee!! June is only half over and we have over 39,000 unique visits... This is UNIQUE NEW visits, folks! We also have a new milestone for May in forum page views at 206,000. Aprils's forum pageviews are at 180,732.

After analyzing the year so far, it is clear that the summer months are busier then the winter months... at least so far. This probably makes sense because I think a lot more people fish in the summer then they do in the winter.

Something that has greatly improved is the Bounce Rate. The Bounce Rate is the number of times a user hits a page and then just leaves. We used to be very bad at this - 1 in 10 first time visitors hit the home page and then left. We now have a bounce rate of 59.60%. This is very much improved from trends we have seen in the past.

In May, 77.52% of all new visits were referred by a search engine WOW! 7.68% were referred by another site, and 14.78% were not referred. What this means is that 14.78% of the visitors either filled in the site in the browser address bar or bookmarked the site. Search engine referrals way WYA up, and it seems referrals from other sites are way down.... go figure.

So what are the most popular pages in May you ask? Well, I thought you would never ask!
Here are the top 5...

1 /minnesota-fishing-forum.taf (main forum page) at 130,732
2 /minnesota-fishing-pictures.taf (pictures page)at 10,359
3 / (home page) at 6,974
4 /fishing-directory-and-resources.taf (directory page)at 5,819
5 /addyourfishinglink.taf (add your link page) at 2,496

This shows that a lot of people are going directly to the forums and bypassing the home page. Not sure if this is good or bad... oh well. Lost of good stuff in the forums and it is the primary reason people come here.

Following are search engine referrals...

1. Google 71.77%
2. MSN 12.50%
3. Yahoo 11.04%
4. AOL 3.82%
5. Ask Jeeves 0.58%
6. AltaVista 0.08%
7. WebCrawler 0.08%
8. Lycos 0.04%
9. Excite 0.04%
10. Snap 0.04%

Google has pretty much dominated for May... like usual

Ranking has been all over the place on Google, the phrase Minnesota Fishing is popping us up at #12, sometimes #9. Minnesota Fishing Forum we are still at #2. Minnesota fishermen and Minnesota fishing tournaments we are #1 - - - HORRAY!!! Minnesota DNR we are at #3 - That's a tough one to get, folks!

I used to give stats on Yahoo and MSN, but what the heck. We aren't getting enough referrals from those engines to even worry about it anymore. If the market share changes on this, in the futuer, we will start adding these stats back in, eh?

Some of the phrases being used to find us. Here is a list of the top 10 for all searches...

1 minnesota fishing reports
2 minnesota dnr
3 fishing pals
4 minnesota Fishing forum
5 mn fishing reports
6 minnesota lake maps
7 fishing team names
8 mn fishing pals
9 mn fishing forum
10 Minnesota Fishing Forums

Seems people are actually searching for our site...mmmm.... Dontchya find this stuff interesting! Looks like people actually search for my fishing pals or mn fishing pals... Dontchya find that REALLY interesting?

Now for referrals from other web sites. A BIG THANK YOU!!!! These are people who were at another site and clicked a link to get here. Here are the top 5...

1. www.steelheaders.org
2. www.springbayresort.com
3. www.tacklebooty.com
4. www.lakesuperiorfishing.com
5. www.sunset-resort.com

Click 'em folks! It's the least we could do!

Anyway, that's it for now. Not bad for a site that is still less then 5 years old! The birthday for the site is February 26, 2004. That is the first day we went live. I would like to thank everyone for their support. If anyone has any questions, you can post them here.

There are programs out there that parse log files from servers that give pretty good analysis and breakdowns on site activity. I believe WebDude is using a combination of Google Analytics and SmaterStats, at least that's what he told me. These programs work very well for marketing people and others in companies to track site usage, where people are coming from, surfing patterns, how long people stay on pages, even entry and exit pages. There is a wealth of information that can be parsed out of the logs.

In one of your previous summaries, you listed a few of the more interesting (or bizarre) web searches that led people to the site. Can you pick out a few humorous ones and share? It's interesting, at least to me, how some searches that would seem to have nothing to do w/the site would find it.
