Not my words but I believe this is a solid report.

Lake Mendota Smallmouth action has been good. The fish have been moving towards the flats and have been active in 8-12' of water. Try throwing plastics like 3-5" grub bodies in Pumpkinseed or Watermelon colors. Crappies have been active in 5-9' of water on minnows or small jigs tipped with spikes. Areas to try are Fox Bluff, County Park, between 2nd Point and Picnic Point, or along the Univ. and City Shorelines. Bluegills should start to get more active in the shallow water with the warming trend under way. Lake Monona Crappies and Bluegills have been active over the tops of the weeds in 5-9' of water, and some Bluegills have started to move on some of the bedding areas. Largemouth Bass continue to be active along shoreline areas near piers and other types of cover. No Monona Musky reports. Lake Waubesa Crappies should be finishing up spawning and the Bluegills should be starting to spawn soon. Some Walleyes have been taken trolling crankbaits in 16-24' of water. Musky action has been picking up on Waubesa lately. Lake Kegonsa has been quiet lately, with some Crappie action continuing, but very few reports of Bluegills. Cherokee Marsh has been producing some Bluegills near the playground. Crystal Lake Bluegill and Crappie action has been good. We've heard water temps. have been in the low 60's.

update from June 21.

Just a reminder that the Madison Chain of Lakes is still under the no wake rule. Water temperatures are in the low 70's. Lake Mendota Smallmouth Bass have been active on the points and bars in 16-20' of water, with leeches working well. Crappies have moved off of the weed edges in 10-14' of water, and Bluegills should be moving onto beds soon. Whitebass have been very active, with trolling working the best, & use blade baits like Zips or Big Dudes, & also Shad Raps or Rattle Traps. Pay attention to your speed, a lot of times they start hitting the best at 3 miles an hour or better. Lake Monona Bluegills are spawning in Turville Bay, Squaw Bay, and numerous other places. Also look for staging pre-spawn and post-spawn Bluegills just out off of the weed edges in 14-20' of water. A vertical presentation with Willyworms or Nail Tails tipped with spikes has been working well for these fish. Largemouth Bass have been caught on the outside weedlines using plastic worms. Lake Waubesa Bluegills also have been in the spawning mode, and fairly active. You should also look for pre-spawn and post-spawn Bluegills on the weed edges. I would guess in the next week to ten days you should be able to start drifting for suspended Bluegills and Crappies on any of the local lakes.
