I'm leaving the hot and humid of St. Louis for Big Lake (25 mi. NW of Ely) next week. Anybody fished it recently? Got a report early in May, but things change fast. Also, what can I expect for black fly annoyance, and what's the best defense (other than cover every square inch of flesh and wear a net)?

Hey C-130 Pilot,

Snap a few pics and send them in and I'll post 'em here, if you like.

Hope this helps

Northern pike are hitting large sucker minnows along the emerging weedbeds on Farm Lake. Walleye are being caught in the tail waters of the power damn on Fall Lake, and in the deep pool in front of Silver Rapids Resort on White Iron Lake. Minnows worked in 6-20 feet of water have produced the majority of walleye. Most sun-soaked, rock-covered shorelines are holding smallmouth bass

Will do on the pics, WebDude. Hope to get lots. BTW, I'm getting a strange feeling not many people fish Big Lake.... Iceman has tips for others (which I appreciate) but this is my second post for info on Big Lake, and not much response. Is it too far up there? Too shallow (deepest is 22' with average about 150)? Too many rocks, or just too far out of the way with other (closer) lakes equal or better for walleye? Please put my mind at rest here that I won't be sorry I'm spending my only week this summer out of the heat and humidity of Central Illinois being frustrated.

The flies, no-see-ums and mosquitoes have just started to bite. The nights are still cool, so bring warm clothes. Yes, Big Lake is a bit out there, but the local bait shops will help you and if you're staying at a resort, they'll definitely put you on fish. If you've got the chance to be portable, there's PLENTY of water to fish around there. Gas prices might make that prohibitive though...
