Hi All,

Happy to be here. Question: I'm heading to Big Lake (25 mi NW of Ely) June 14-22 and wondered if anybody has fished the lake? I know it's shallow (22' deepest; average 15') with LOTS of big rocks, but that's about all I know. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Hope I don't have to put an "ice-breaker" on the bow of my Lund to get on the lake).

thanks

I do know there are smallmouth in there along with northern, walleye and cisco. The DNR stocks the lake regularily with walleye and the average walleye caught is 15". A lot of suckers though. That lake is pretty much a starting point for people going into the BWCA. Might be a good lake to try. A lot of people just blow right through it. There are a lot of good lakes up in that area.

Thanks, John. Happy to be here talking my favorite topic. Scratches the itch but doesn't do anything to satisfy the hunger like getting a line in the water.

Welcome c-130 pilot,
I grew up in Ely and worked at big lake lodge when I was 13. If your staying at a lodge on the lake, trust the guides or the dockboys. If I remember that lake correctly find the inlets or the outlets. I think that because of the late ice out the eyes will be in shallow and not on the rockpiles yet. I haven't fished that lake in about 15 years though and things change.
You can also check with Lin or the people at voyageur north for more info. Lin and Jon are family friends and good people. Great place for bait and gear as well.

FYI (Shameless plug) if you are in need of a haircut, call my Mother (Debs Country Cutters). Her shop is on hanson road at the begining of the echo trail. Let me know if your interested and I can give ya the number. smile smiley Keeping on the same topic the best Italian in town is Sir G's on the main drag. My wifes Aunt owns it.
Man I feel like a ad agency. Anyways.

Good luck in Ely its a great place to visit.

Take a kid fishing, it'll keep you young.

thanks chewoneyes! Not enough hair left to cut, but sure do enjoy Italian -- maybe it'll grow the hair back -- I keep tryin'.

Thanks, T-Bone. Even being over 500 miles away, just talking to you guys makes me feel bettyer about not being there for the opener tomorrow. At least I'm not on the other side of the world getting shot at like some of my brothers in arms. Best of luck to all of you. Stay warm and wear the lift jackets.
