I sent a cool smiley article to the editor of Outdoor News regarding Walleye size rules.
I have been fishing Mille Lacs since the early 60's and I am upset with the new regulations for 2008.
I think the DNR should make a new ruling. The limit should be changed to 60 inches.
In other words if you catch a 23 incher and a 27 incher, you have a total of 50 inches with only 10 inches left. You are done for the day.
You can keep those Walleyes as they are legal.
As it stands now, the large Walleyes you release don't have much of a chance of survial after being netted, un-hooked, handled, etc.

Mmmm... I might like that idea... total inches. In fact, I like it.

By the way, welcome to the site. You might be interested in this post too, if you are wondering why there is such a tight slot up on Mille Lacs...

Quit fishing mille lacs a few years ago. reason I got tired of dodging all the dead or dying fish. Not from gill nets, but from fisherman like us who mishandle or keep the release size fish out of water to long.

For many years I was an angler representative to the Mille Lacs regulation advisory committee. We discussed a lot of possible regulations but I don't remember one like your suggesting. It sounds like it might have merit. If I was you I would send an e-mail to the Mille Lacs region DNR office in Aitkin. They would be the ones that would bring it up at the advisory meeting next fall. I suspect the DNR would tell you that too many of the prime spawning size fish will be taken. As far as many of those fish dieing anyway, from misshandling, your right. A large fish brought up from deep cold water to the hot surface water has a good chance of not making it. The MN DNR did an extensive multi-year study of that very thing and the regulations have been tightened accordingly. The alternative is to shut down fishing in the hottest part of summer and that is not an option. Walleye anglers might want to take a page from the muskie anglers book on this issue. Good muskie anglers don't fish muskie when the water temp reaches 80 degrees. If you want to fish Mille Lacs during hot water periods try out some of the best smallmouth fishing in the country instead. They are less sensitve to hot water release.

I am out of Fishermens Wharf now. Had to move my fish house from Liberty Beach which went bankrupt. Too bad, it was a fun spot !
