Almost time to hit the Minnehaha creek/Mississippi river again...
A little birdie told me that some shore fisherman are picking up a few fish off of the rip rap up towards the dam. Probably a slippery climb along the rocks to get there though.
I hear the confluence area is still pretty low, not allowing for a slack water area to develop. We still need to wait for the snow up north to melt to raise the levels to the point they need to be but we are getting closer.
Anyone hear anything else from the area?

Awesome! You think it would be worth trying later this week?? I have thursday off and I wouldnt mind casting into some open water.
Thats all catch and release, Right?
Maybe you could help me on this- I'm completely new to the river fishing, I drive over mississippi everyday where 694 and 94 intersect and all the open water really gets me excited.. Is their any fish in that area of the river? can I shore fish around their or is it pointless?

Hey Nofish, & Logan,it is getting to be a good time to hit the river again, haven't been there in a few weeks, hopefull the snow we had will raise the water level a little. Logan there are a few parks with boat ramps up that way, but the continuous season stretch of the mississippi starts at the Ford dam to the Hastings dam. when in doubt, I just call the DNR myself about a new water, I have found that to be cheaper.

I've been getting the itch to head down there and throw a few casts too! Maybe this next weekend if it's nice out.

Logan, I am not real familiar with that stretch. The area just below the Ford damn is probably the best place to try right now. There are alot of areas on both the Minneapolis and St. Paul sides to try.
Usually a jig and minnow is your best bet, plastics also work well at times. I heard some smallies being caught on slip bobbers and crappie minnows the other week as well.

I can be. Its like any fishing you need to hit it at the right time, in the right spot with the right bait. But there are always fish in that area, just not always the species you are targeting.

If you like catfish, try a frozen shrimp on a circle hook, get a couple of big ones from the grocery store, freeze them solid (they last longer). either way you'll have dinner..

Caligrl and I tried to walk down to the mouth of where the Minnihaha meets the Mississippi and we couldn't get down the 85 steps that were full of snow and ice. If we had spikes on our boots, we might have had a chance, but without them, No Way. So we ended up going to the Minnesota off of Black Dog road. No fish, but it was a really nice day to throw some casts .

I wanted to get down there this weekend but didn't have the time. I am hoing next weekend.
There is a way down to the river without having to take the stairs. Its probably a little longer walk but its much easier and safer when its icy.
There is a parking area over in the picnic grounds that has a gravel access road leading down to the river, the gravel road follows the creek down to the confluence.
